“neat place!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

Really liked the design and decor of the hotel which nodded towards a classic NYC mix of industrial, modern, beaux arts blend.

The rooms are a decent size, a bit tight for a family of four. As referenced in previous reviews, storage and hooks were not a design priority so that made it a bit uncomfortable. If we were in NY for longer than one night it would have been frustrating.

The housekeeping is generally clean. The rooms are hardwood flooring which we like, but, I noticed quite a bit of dust in corners and behind the small furnishings when looking for a scarce plug.

Our room on the ninth floor was sunny (no long building shadows!). We didn't hear as much street noise in the evening, but don't plan on sleeping in, by 8:30 there were garbage trucks and sirens wailing.

Finally, the location is convenient. But I think I prefer being in the higher numbers where we've stayed in the past closer to Rockefeller Center, but that's just personal preference.

In other reviews I saw comments about a burly bouncer guarding the entrance to the rooftop bar--we were actually hoping to see him as he'd become quite a character on this site for this hotel--but we saw no evidence and my husband had no problem entering the rooftop bar.

Hotel exceeded expectations. Excellent location and atmosphere. Close to subway and taxi rides inexpensive from this location. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooftop lounge atmosphere amazing. Decor and style very unique and inviting.

Room Tip: Upper floors less street noise. 1217 less noise from rooftop bar.

my husband and i chose this hotel sight unseen because of the location being in the middle of all we wanted to do. we checked in a bit early and they had a room ready for us and gave us an upgrade as well no extra charge and a cold bottle of Voss water. the lounge and lobby is really nicely decorated. The rooms are not huge but agian really nicely decorated and big bathroom. the roof top bar was apperantly a hot spot but no wating for us because we were guests!!! I would totally come back.

I stayed here earlier this month for one week & was upgraded to an 'empire suite' on the 12th floor. A fab boutique style hotel, with stylish bars, including the incredibly busy rooftop bar. Great views from my room of the Empire State Building. The room was big, especially compared to other hotels in mid-town Manhattan. The restaurant, Parker & Quinn, served a fab breakfast, reasonably priced. Nothing bad to say about this hotel, friendly staff, nice atmosphere, perfectly located. Would stay here again.

After searching for ages for a family hotel, booked this one after reading such good reviews. Travelling with two kids there was so much more we had to consider. What a fantastic place to stay. They treated us like we were the only people staying from the minute we arrived. Lovely decor and really spacious rooms. We had two double beds in our room and there was still loads of space to be comfortable and not get in each other's way. Lovely spacious bathroom too with gorgeous complimentary toiletries. Couldn't have picked a better location either. Near enough to Times Square to walk but far enough that the noise didn't spoil our much needed sleep at the end of a very long day of sight seeing . Would definitely recommend Refinery Hotel and I haven't even left yet :-)

I stayed 2 night at the Refinery this weekend. Overall, it was a great experience. The location was convenient, especially to Penn Station. The staff was very friendly on check-in, and was able to get me into a room at noon, much earlier than the 4pm check-in time. The room was spacious, and I loved the free coffee in the morning. I also liked that they supplied free earplugs, since my room was on the second floor and there was some street noise. Both Winnie's (the lobby bar) and the restaurant Parker & Quinn were very good, but the rooftop bar was noisy and packed. Only drawback was that it took ages to get hot water. When I called to ask about it, they sent up an engineer who was kind of obnoxious about it (when I said I could not get hot water, his response was "Are you sure?"). Apparently it takes several minutes for the hot water to travel from the boiler on the roof down to the lower floors. Still, it was a good experience and I'd stay there again, especially since I booked a great rate on Hotels Tonight.

First off, the location is great. It's central enough that you're within an easy walk to Times Square, Empire State Building, Broadway, Rockefeller, MoMA, 5th Ave. Shopping, libraries, parks, train stations, etc. but it's quiet enough to be a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Rooms are not so big, but the size is sufficient considering we're in the center of New York. They're tastefully simple and clean with artsy touches here and there. Overall it's a comfortable stay.

Service is helpful and friendly. I find encounters with people in New York to be generally cold and rushed but you can always come home to this hotel and expect to be greeted with familiarity and warmth.
