“delicious surprise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

We wanted to eat before a jazz show at the jazz standard and were looking for a good place on the 27th. We stopped there and were happily surprise to find excellent food and a helpful staff (took time to explain the menu and ask about our preferences). It really was a great experience overall. Our glasses of water were always full and the manager came twice to make sure we were satisfied and happy with our choices.

FYI: there is no alcohol sold there

“Lost the magic from our first visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2012

Coming back after 3 years, the place is not quite the same anymore.

Food was OK, but came in the wrong order (main dish before starter) and didnt quite combine well.

Service was also a bit of a mixed bag. Plenty of staff, but getting a drink went slow whilst they were eager to take our order for the food.

“Heavenly Masala Dosai (South Indian pancake)!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2012

Visited New York a couple of weeks ago, and one of the highlights was a visit to Chennai Garden, an all vegetarian Indian restaurant that you will find at 129 E. 27th Street. Their Puri and other food was excellent too, but that Masalai Dosai was really fantastic!

The only small minus was that Chennai Garden did not serve alocoholic beverages - a big, cold glass of beer would have been nice...

“Great Indian food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2012

We have been to this place twice - it seems to have changed ownership since we were last there three years ago - it's now byob - but the food here is still wonderful - a match for any Indian restaurant I've been to in Britain. Menu is relatively wide ranging but definitely vegetarian friendly; we, a party of four adults, had four different dishes and each was excellent.
Service from our waiter was perhaps a bit brusque, but he was extremely knowledgeable and even recommended we cut down our starters order since he thought we'd asked for too much - and he was right - portions are generous.
And yet the food is so inexpensive - OK - no drinks, but really good meals for four adults for $70 including tip?
There are other good Indian restaurants in this little Midtown enclave, but we'll definitely go back here when we're in Manhattan next.

“Fabulous fast food...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2012

Pleasantly surprised to find this vegetarian fast food on 27th...great value for money and excellent snacks and meals from south India and gujarat. They have specials on the weekends. A good place for informal comfort food.
