“Very different from SF”
Reviewed August 26, 2013 via mobile

If you have been to the restaurant in SF, do not try to compare or look for the same experience. New York has its very own marvelous flair and tastes. For example, the fresh rice cakes are made locally, of course they are going to be different. Three of us, three different entrees, all were so different, true to the ingredients, and delicious. You can ask to have certain dishes prepared vegetarian or vegan. The steamed eggplant in chili
bean sauce were a bit over cooked, and we could no longer taste the eggplants. Mapo tofu was on the greasy side but excellent. Thrice cooked bacon was truly "baconed" scrumptious. Kung Pao pastrami was also very good. The hostess and waiter were absolutely delightful. It is a very small place; RESERVE or be PATIENT! As far as spicy, the three of us did not find it overly hot- and definitively less than SF. On a down note, separate charge for rice, and the drinks are overpriced for what is served.

“Very good Chinese - go Sunday at 12.00 in order to avoid the crowd.”
Reviewed July 14, 2013 via mobile

Very good Chinese - go Sunday at 12.00 in order to avoid the crowd. The location is hip, and the interior is just about right on the run-down but not too so scale. The waitresses seemed a bit dizzy at times - could have been the chili steaming from the woks. Pop around the corner afterwards to Konditori for some great Swedish coffee.

“Not for the fainthearted!”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

An explosion of flavor and spices. The Szechuan pepper tingle is amazing and to be relished if you are up to the challenge. Some reviewers complained about the excessive spiciness of the food here but they have probably never read Fuschia Dunlop's books on authentic Szechuan cooking. If you want bland do not come here and waste my waiting time complaining about the food. Go get some Cantonese take-out and think you are eating real Chinese food. If you are not ready to have your taste buds assaulted and challenged there are a myriad of other Chinese restaurants in NYC that will make you happy. If you are like me and can't afford a trip to the Szechuan province and want to experience something close to Szechuan street food come here and have your taste buds rewarded with this amazing food. The wait staff is attentive and friendly but I don't blame them for not suffering the poor fools who don't appreciate what this place is about. The Mapo Tofu was perhaps the best dish I have ever had. The chicken wings were a close second. Read about the effects of the Szechuan pepper before you come here.

“Terrific Food, worth the wait”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

Tiny, hidden space with fantastic flavors and unusual dishes. Well worth the wait, Small dining room, however, so between the "intimacy" and the spices, it can get a little warm in there.

“Not your typical chinese”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

When dining here be on the lookout because it is tucked away with a sub street level entrance. Overall the food was very good and the flavors worked well together. The service was pretty nonchalant but it didnt take away from the meal. The ingredients used in many of the dishes are not typical such as pork jowl and chicken hearts, but I assume thats why you would come here in the first place. Don't let that intimidate you. Many of the entrees are served family style and are meant to be shared. I ordered the noodle and scallop dish with XO sauce which was well prepared and very flavorful. Others at my table ordered the brisket (very tender), and the salt cod fried rice, which were all very tasty.
