“Excellent Tacos and Margaritas”
Reviewed December 12, 2012

Managed to get a table with no wait, so we took it. Chips and salsa were really good, come with 3 types of salsa, none of which were really as hot as i was expecting. Margaritas were fantastic. I had the pork tacos, my wife had the short rib tacos. I definitely preferred the pork ones, they were so good. Typical NYC place, very small and tables are crammed in tight, but the service was great as was the food. Definitely worth checking out.

I ate here with my family primarily because we love a good margarita and we saw that the Village Voice had given this place the best margarita in NYC award. The margaritas lived up to expectations and the food was really good. I'm pescetarian, so I eat a lot of vegetarian food, and I was really impressed by the flavor and quality of the vegetarian small plates we had at the table. Loved the ceviches as well. Sure, they aren't really authentic, but they are definitely original and certainly delicious. One of the waiters explained to us that the chef incorporated an Asian ingredient into the snapper ceviche, which is what makes it so interesting and unique. Speaking of the waiters, they were are very friendly, cool people and they took great care of us.
One caution: they told us we should do 2-4 small plates per person, but beware because 4 small plates is WAY too much! Two per person is enough.

I'd have given 5/5 had it not been for the service.

We were staying in NYC for the first time and wanted to try somewhere to eat that wasn't designed to rip tourists off. The menu and prices looked good so we asked if they had a table for 4 - we hadn't booked but they said it wasn't a problem.

10 minutes into the meal they told us that someone needed the table in 90 minutes - not a problem as we were off sight-seeing and weren't planning on staying long.

Sadly this meant that the waitress practically never left our side. Drinks were topped up constantly, the main arrived within seconds of finishing the started and my son's plate was taken away before he's finished!

We were out within 45 minutes.

Why give us a table and then behave like this?

The food was excellent but the meal was ruined by their behaviour.

“Caution, if you're looking for traditional Mexican”
Reviewed September 16, 2012 via mobile

Many people will track this restaurant down because it's owned by a high-profile celebrity chef. The food does live up to what you might expect from a Top Chef contestant, but be cautious if you're looking for first-rate, authentic, traditional Mexican dishes. Everything here gets an eccentric, "creative" spin that, while tasty and well prepared, often strays quite a way from something identifiably Mexican. The tamales, for example, taste more like they're made with sweet corn bread than a traditional masa. If you're looking for traditional, stick to one on the two, small, family-owned storefronts within a block of Añejo.

“Wonderful Sunday brunch with fresh Sangria/tasty food”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

We had a great brunch at Anejo (1 pm) on Labor Day weekend—it was steamy outside so we didn't sit at the outdoor tables, but the quiet tables on the side street were tempting. Staff was very nice and attentive; the place was empty. Loved all the choices on the brunch menu (I had gourmet huevos rancheros, friend had the Spanish-flavored omelette, husband had a deluxe burrito with eggs in it. Chorizo home fries on the side for all. Guacamole and home-made sangria to start.) They also have a $25 brunch with 3(!) brunch drinks included, but we went a la carte. The tequila bar was impressive and beautiful to look at. This new-looking place with its huge windows and tasting tables must be wonderful at night.
