“Great food, personal service.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

Attended at Rafels for dinner after sampling a few delicious morsels earlier in the day on a food tour.

Enjoyed the 'Chefs Selections' option which consisted of copious amounts of authentic Italian fare. At $45pp we thought it was great value when compared to the current NY restaurant week 'Prix Fixe' options at 38pp.

The friendly and knowledgable staff promptly served us with some assorted house baked breads and antipasto, which went great with our initial cocktails and sangria. A delicious fava bean, fennel and rocket salad was then served with 3 cheese arancini - great combo!

Next up was a pork, veal and beef ragu with tagliatelle and a baked gnocchi with tomato sugo and tallegio - Both ample servings!

Already full and thinking we'd done pretty well for our dollars out came a large braised pork chop with summer salad, and a tempura style fish with Mediterranean vegetables! Both divine!

To finish with the house ricotta cheese cake really topped off a sensational meal! Tea or coffee was also included, but we just couldn't fit it in!

Really enjoyed the open kitchen, watching the chefs in action!

Whilst Rafael the head chef and owner was busy overseeing his fellow chefs, he did find the time to speak to his customers which was nice. Was great to be able to tell the chef in person his delicious the good was!

Authentic Italian food with a good atmosphere. All round winner!

Thanks for a great night!

“Excellent Italian dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2013

My husband and I were visiting the city for a few days and decided on Rafele for our anniversary dinner based on reviews from TripAdvisor. It did not disappoint in any way. Staff were friendly, the service was attentive without being overbearing, and the food was outstanding. We have traveled to northern Italy and were looking for a similar experience in the city - simply great food in a relaxed setting. There is nothing pretentious or overly complicated on the menu - the offerings are typical fresh Italian cuisine in which the ingredients are left to speak for themselves. The appetizers were delicious, fresh pasta was exceptional, the fish was perfectly cooked, and the cheesecake was fantastic - creamy, not too sweet, I'm guessing prepared with fresh ricotta. They even sent complimentary Prosecco to our table before the meal as an anniversary treat. We truly enjoyed our dinner there and will definitely return when we are next in NYC.

“Average Italian Dining Experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2013

Saw the glowing reviews about Rafele on TripAdvisor and bought in. Kinda wish I hadn't. I have at least three Italian restaurants in my hometown that, in my opinion, are better than Rafele.

I wouldn't call this restaurant bad, but definitely not worth nearly five stars. Our service was average. Waiter seemed more preoccupied with a table of two gentlemen that were on their second bottle of wine. He stopped over to take our orders and that was about it.

Food was nice tasting but not enough flavor. Mostly bland spaghetti sauce on my main pasta dish. Ordered calamari and prosciutto on fried dough for the table. Interesting flavor but not enough to make me truly enjoy my meal. The only thing I really enjoyed was the bread and antipasti that is brought to the table before the meal. Ordered the Aperol Spritz, friend got a mojito. Again, just not great. Didn't even want to order dessert.

I liked the area the restaurant was in and had wished we would have kept walking around as other restaurants looked and smelled better.
