I love a great authentic mexican restaurant and have been in nyc for a year, and rarely do I find a mexican restaurant up to my standards. Ponche meets those expecations. Just off of 9th ave, this small intimate restaurant makes you feel like you are in Mexico City. One thing to remember though, they do not have a liquor license since they sit right across the street from a high school, but you can bring your own bottle. Just stop at the liquor store on the corner of 10th and 49th, grab a bottle of wine, sangria or margarita's and head on over to Ponche for an amazing meal.

Very good for east coast Mexican food and not overly Americanized or swimming in cheese or salt. Good service and cosy space. BYOB.

I like the beef with onions/peppers taco.

I didn't care for my hubby's fried fish taco/burrito, but he liked it.

Last year i had lunch at Ponche a couple times as I was at a seminar near their location. The food was plentiful, tasty and very reasonably priced and the staff were friendly and took pride in their work. I was worried about the place since it is hidden and i was the only one in the place each day. Last night we were in the area and i wanted to see if they made it. I was extremely surprised to see that not only were they still there but business was thriving. We decided to stop in for apps as we already had reservations else where. The staff was friendly and the chicken nachos were excellent. We should have cancelled the reservations we had at Destino's at stayed her for the meal. It is a great place to go for professional and friendly staff and great food at a great price.

We wanted to eat some Mexican food for dinner and decided to give this small little restaurant a try. They don't have alcoholic beverages but BYO is accepted. The waiter was very friendly and the food delicious. We would definitely return to this awesome and still cheap (compared to other restaurants in that neighborhood) restaurant.
