Had a couple of great meals at St James Gate on Upper West side - staff are very friendly, nice atmosphere there and the food was good - also very good value for New York

This is a British pub type place in the West Side on Amsterdam. There are about 500 other restaurants around, but this one was the only one that was not astronomically priced. At 6 pm on a Saturday evening, this place was so jam packed, we had to sit out on the sidewalk. It was pleasant enough, so that was fine, but can't speak to the ambiance. The food we had was excellent. Fish and Chips were pretty traditional, though a tad greasy, the shepherd's pie was outstanding... very flavorful, and not to saucy. Service was good for NYC standards. Very happening place.

St. James Gate is a keeper - one of those rare places that's as authentic as a Dublin pub, only with a friendly, neighborhood New York feel. The website photos are a bit overly complimentary, as things certainly look more romantically lit at night. The pub is certainly a bit more worn and torn than what you'd think from the pics. Still, it is unquestionably one of the more welcoming and friendly Irish pubs in the City, and certainly less flinty and more embracing than the typical pub back in the old home country! The Guinness and Smitwicks' are both in great nick, the selections of Jamesons and Bushmills are broad and complete, and the pub food is frankly much better than what you'd expect back in Dublin or Killkenny. Shepards' pie fantastic. And the service is the best, bonnie lasses tending to your needs, offering the happy hour specials, and all the punters that favor the place seem mellow and happy. Sure, and there are lots of Irish pubs in New York. But, for the upper west side, St. James' Gate is the place!

We recently had dinner and drinks here on a Friday at 9 pm. They had good food, service that was not intrusive, but attentive. Even having our twelve year old was no problem.
