I wasn't sure what to expect so I booked a double room for two nights. They were overbooked so I got a single bed room for the first night. The room was small, with comfortable bed, contemporary furnishings, desk, clothes rack, safe, TV on wall, excellent wi-fi, and storage drawer under the bed. Bath was very modern and clean. The room was quiet, and I couldn't hear any other occupants. In fact, I kept the room for both nights at a reasonable rate.

The Salvation Taco bar was hopping with lots of 20s and 30s professionals, and the rooftop bar offered amazing view. Just a few blocks from Grand Central in midtown East. It's great for a single traveler and cozy room for a couple.

Room Tip: My corner room (floor 9) with single bed had a better layout than my colleague's double bed room...

The Good
Price
Location
Cleanliness
Welcoming reception staff
Helpful Concierge
Free WiFi
Room safe

The Bad
No Tea & Coffee facilities in room (although there's not enough room to swing a cat not to mind have a kettle)
Trickle of water disguised as a designer shower
Tap for shower & tap for washbasin irritatingly turn on in opposite directions of each other
No plug in sink, am I supposed to shave in the toilet bowl?
Annoying flashing light on room smoke alarm at night
Confusing illogical light switches
Very small very hard "double" bed
Very small accommodation (if you are over 6.0" or not of average build don't expect to have a comfortable stay)
Bar on roof open to the public who access these areas via 1 of 3 lifts which are also for guests to access their rooms (therefore there is a complete disregard for guest security & comfort. Sometimes the wait for the lifts is exhausting & they arrive full of drunk loud obnoxious people in suits - you know the type). Would be much better having an express lift just stopping on the 17th floor for the bar so that there is no access to the guest rooms.
Vomit-like cocktails try at your peril.

The Ugly
Clientele in roof bar one of the most un-gay friendly & pretentious crowds I have ever encountered in NYC
Air ventilation system in other rooms (so no control of noise yourself) likened to a washing machine on full spin intermittently throughout the night.

Verdict
Perfect accommodation for young, hard of hearing, short & slim party animals with limited budget. Take ear-plugs don't expect to sleep in total comfort.

Room Tip: Don't book a room on the 17th Floor as this is where the roof-top bar is, also recommend not boo...

Hotel is in a good location. Grand Central is a few blocks away. Rooms we small and bed was very small but the hotel served it's purpose. Has a really cool rooftop bar. Price was right. Will absolutely stay here again.

Great location and good looking, The Pod is great for anyone who doesn't plan on staying in their room for most of their trip. The rooms are tiny, but clean and efficient, and the beds comfortable. Free wifi that's actually working adds to the value. I'm definitely coming back.

The good points are the location, friendly check in, buzzy bar with two table tennis tables. The bad points are that the name of the hotel Pod is an accurate description of the bedroom which was tiny! The rail to hang clothes is over the side table next to the bed. The basin is so small that it is inevitable the floor gets wet and the single tap is an absurd cost saving. The towels are small and thin so you need two towels to dry off after a shower.

I would recommend Pod 39 to anyone staying in Manhattan for a short time. Close to Grand Central, Times Square and the Empire State Building, it is clean with friendly staff. Small rooms for a short stay worked out for our group of 6. Night life on the 17th floor is hopping midweek.
