We are a couple who have been to New York several times before and have stayed in midtown & downtown. We prefer downtown so we opted to stay at the Sohotel for new year 2009.
If you expect a luxury hotel you will be very disappointed. However if you are looking for a great little hotel, away from midtown manhattan, but in a great location - you can't go wrong.
Fantastic location - feels like you are in the real New York! On first appearances doesn't look great but located on the edge of China town very near to little italy (not quite soho as the name suggests but very close). On leaving the hotel go left (NOT RIGHT) & you are straight into little Italy & Soho - lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. (Sal's pizza - great little restaurant who do fab take away pizza!)
very near several subway stations and you can easily reach most parts of New York- We would recommend using Spring street and walking a little, rather than Grand Street which is busy but not touristy - we used it often, including late a night with no problems, but a couple of new yorkers one night told us to 'be careful round there!' and Bowery which felt a little dodgy in the day and we never used at night!
Nice friendly staff who were very happy to help.
Lovely lobby, free safety deposit boxes and luggage storage on last day. Free tea/coffee available every morning in the lobby. very clean rooms, cleaned every day with fresh towels twice a day!
ceiling fan which we used (almost) every night despite it being late december.
may not recommend for first time visitors to NY unless well travelled, confident in unknown areas or traveling in larger group. It is on the edge of china town which is great in the day but very quiet at night. Midtown may be better (more touristy) but the area is actually OK.
very small room but this is the case in any standard room in manhattan - to get a larger room expect to pay big supplements!
we had room 445 which had no hot water (not great when arriving after a very long days traveling). we mentioned it twice and were told they would send someone up...Went to reception the following morning and said we still had no water, had complained twice etc etc and were promptly moved rooms.
second room 320 was absolutely fine but had no heating which was really not a problem until New Year's Eve when weather dropped to -17 and it needed a combination of beer shirt & fleece to get some sleep!
Overall we had a great stay at the Sohotel and would definitely stay there again and recommend it to others with the above taken into consideration. For the price we paid, especially including new year's eve, it was good value.
If it is a special trip or you want to blow the budget stay at the Soho Grand or the Tribeca Grand - they are amazingly cool hotels!
However, if like most of us you need your money to go as far as possible and you might want to avoid midtown then the Sohotel is a good budget option.
