“great location, get what you pay for!”
Reviewed January 3, 2009

We are a couple who have been to New York several times before and have stayed in midtown & downtown. We prefer downtown so we opted to stay at the Sohotel for new year 2009.

If you expect a luxury hotel you will be very disappointed. However if you are looking for a great little hotel, away from midtown manhattan, but in a great location - you can't go wrong.

pros:

Fantastic location - feels like you are in the real New York! On first appearances doesn't look great but located on the edge of China town very near to little italy (not quite soho as the name suggests but very close). On leaving the hotel go left (NOT RIGHT) & you are straight into little Italy & Soho - lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. (Sal's pizza - great little restaurant who do fab take away pizza!)

very near several subway stations and you can easily reach most parts of New York- We would recommend using Spring street and walking a little, rather than Grand Street which is busy but not touristy - we used it often, including late a night with no problems, but a couple of new yorkers one night told us to 'be careful round there!' and Bowery which felt a little dodgy in the day and we never used at night!

Nice friendly staff who were very happy to help.

Lovely lobby, free safety deposit boxes and luggage storage on last day. Free tea/coffee available every morning in the lobby. very clean rooms, cleaned every day with fresh towels twice a day!

ceiling fan which we used (almost) every night despite it being late december.

cons:

may not recommend for first time visitors to NY unless well travelled, confident in unknown areas or traveling in larger group. It is on the edge of china town which is great in the day but very quiet at night. Midtown may be better (more touristy) but the area is actually OK.

very small room but this is the case in any standard room in manhattan - to get a larger room expect to pay big supplements!

we had room 445 which had no hot water (not great when arriving after a very long days traveling). we mentioned it twice and were told they would send someone up...Went to reception the following morning and said we still had no water, had complained twice etc etc and were promptly moved rooms.

second room 320 was absolutely fine but had no heating which was really not a problem until New Year's Eve when weather dropped to -17 and it needed a combination of beer shirt & fleece to get some sleep!

Overall we had a great stay at the Sohotel and would definitely stay there again and recommend it to others with the above taken into consideration. For the price we paid, especially including new year's eve, it was good value.

If it is a special trip or you want to blow the budget stay at the Soho Grand or the Tribeca Grand - they are amazingly cool hotels!

However, if like most of us you need your money to go as far as possible and you might want to avoid midtown then the Sohotel is a good budget option.

I went to the Sohotel with 2 other friends. We were on a very tight budget but knew we wanted to stay in Manhattan, knew we wanted our own private bathroom, and knew we wanted to be near a subway station. This limited our options so the Sohotel seemed like the best choice. In spite of the numerous bad reviews on tripadvisor, we booked it.

I went expecting the worst, and was pleasantly surprised. The Sohotel is never going to be considered a beautiful, luxurious hotel, but that's not what it's there for. It's great value for money in a great location, and you'd be hard pressed to find en-suite rooms in Manhattan for anything cheaper. Trust me, we looked.

There were bad aspects - scaffolding is still up so we had builders right outside our window (blinds stayed shut the entire trip - don't expect a room with a view!), who were noisy from 7.30am-5pm. The walls of the hotel are also paper thin so you hear people coming back late at night. However, I came armed with ear-plugs so after the first night (when I was so jetlagged I forgot to use them!), this didn't bother me.

The 'decor' of the room wasn't stunning, but then why would it be at what we were paying?

The good points outweighed this though.

1. Room size - for three girls in one room, we were a bit concerned, however we had 2 double beds, a bathroom, and some space to spare, which was pretty decent.

2. Location - absolutely fantastic. Walk to the right of the hotel, and it's a little bit dodgy, however, walk to the left and the further down the road you go, the nicer it gets. 5-10 minutes walk to the left and you're hitting designer shops, and nice restaurants and bars. A great area to eat out in, and to shop. It's also near lots of different subway stations. If you don't mind walking 5-10 minutes, you can connect to pretty much any line. You can get uptown in about 15-20 minutes. Absolutely ideal.

3. Cleanliness - this was fine. They cleaned the rooms and bathrooms daily, and were constantly changing our towels, which was much better than I was expecting.

4. The staff were also fairly helpful. They offered to carry our bags for us, were quite quick to deal with complaints, and also gave us leaflets about certain touristy things we were interested in, and booked our taxi to the airport.

Best for young, budget travellers.

All in all, for what you're paying, the Sohotel is great. Don't go expecting the Ritz, but rather a good base to get out and see NYC from.

At the Sohotel you are greeted with a nice flight of steps to get to
reception! A good way to walk off the stiffness from flying! Just
make sure use your back straps if you have a backpack!!

The room was small (as with any hotel room in New York) but verycomfortable, very clean and had a very nice big TV. Noise could beheard from the streets (but it was not an issue for us) and the roomwas cleaned daily (just remember to leave a tip!).

Hotel Staff are polite & helpful (although not overly friendly). Due
to our delays we phoned ahead at LA airport to say that we were
running late etc and encountered no problems due to the hotel's 24hour reception!

3 blocks away from the hotel there is a 24 hour "cafe" (more of a
deli like supermarket) serving hot and cold food, beer and the samestock you would expect in a small supermarket.

The Hotel is in a great location. Very close to the Subway. The
Bowery station is just across the road (which takes you to JFK see below) and only a short walk away is Spring St Station which takes you into the heart of the city (The Upper East Side, Times Square, the start of the Upper West Side & Central park etc).

SoHotel - JFK Airport by Subway.
Walk Across the Street to the Bowery Station
Get on the J line (Brown) to Sutphine Blvd (The stop before Jamacia Centre, Queens)
Transfer to the Air Train which takes you round all Terminals of JFK.
Subway cost $2 US . Airtrain cost $5 US .

First of all, do not believe the pictures they show on the website. Our room looked nothing like that. The botchy paint was peeling away and rusting and moss in the bathroom with stains everywhere. the bed was unsleepable. we asked for a change of room and they refused. to add to that the window was shut and it rained in the night. the water came through and damaged all our stuff on the night stand. mobile everything gone. while waiting for someone to listen to our complaint for 1 hour, the smoke alarms went off and no one did anything. the staff just wandered around. incredible. finally the fire brigade arrived. construction work goign on everywhere and drilling all day through.
the only good thing about this place is the photographer.. his imagination to capture this hotel in a beautiful way which in real life is unimaginable.
congrats photographer..
never going back here.

Had booked SoHotel for the location and as a Time Out recommendation, but then got worried over negative customer feedback.
Happily, our 3 night stay was very enjoyable. SoHotel has a great location, very helpful staff , is comfy, incredibly quiet (despite location) and it was very competitively priced. Would go again definitely.
Despite bad knees and a heavy suitcase, the lack of elevator wasn't a problem, it's not exactly a skyscraper.
Would definitely go back, and instead of looking for potentially soulless regular hotels in blander districts.

We stayed here based on the great reviews we'd seen on TripAdvisor, which outnumbered the bad ones for reasons I can't understand. We arrived to find that the staff were more interested in watching the Giants game rather than serve us. When they eventually got around to it they took 30 minutes to check us in. You would swear we were their first ever customers...but obviously not as when we eventually got our key and entered our room we were shocked to find another girl getting changed! I returned to reception and they spoke to me like it was my fault that I got the wrong room. Whilst I was getting asigned another room there were several other customers comaplaining about many things. I eventually got another room and it was a hell hole, the heating system made noises like from the movie "the burbs" and lots of other people complained about the noises it was making. They did a great job on acting surprised when anyone brought it to their attention. Oh and by the way you will wake up with builders peering in your window as the outside is covered in scaffolding since 2007. It's such a pity because the location is great, and the reception area is actually pretty ok, but apart from that stay here at your peril.

  • Liked — The view of it over my shoulder as I left it
  • Disliked — The heating system WILL keep you awake all night

this hotel is NOT recommendable at all. My room had a cockroach, I took a photo of it as evidence!!! The heating made such noise that it is disturbing. There s no phone in the room. Next to the hotel is a bar that plays loud music, sleeping was only possible with wax earplugs in the room I had first. After complaining I got a room facing the street, which was a little better. There s constant draft from the unisolated windows. People at the front desk are unprofessional. They forgot to put my name in the computer, so when FedEx delivered a package for me I had ordered they didn t accept it and send it away. So, after all it was a really unpleasant stay, and it s NOT worth the money at all!!!
