“A gem at Times Square”

Tried to find a hotel that was affordable and well placed in Manhatten. Though not cheap Hotel St james rates were more than competitive and the location....close to everything - 1/2 block from times Square, close to Grayline tours, very close to theatres and museums. NY transit is excellent and stations are close by. Rooms are great, elevator old but kind of cool and staff very friendly and helpful. Nice delis nearby and everything you want to see in mid-Manhatten at your fingertips. We will be back

I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights with 3 other girls, we all shared as we were on a budget. The hotel was ideally located, just a block or 2 from Time Square, the reception desk clerks were friendly and helpful and although this was a very basic hotel, it was very roomy. The room itself had a TV, power shower and beds, there was no iron, kettle or even alarm clock. The beds were comfortable and clean.

it didnt cost a lot to stay and essentially you get what you pay for, which is the location. I enjoyed my stay here and even on a budget, i think this hotel does exactly what it says on the tin! i would stay here again if i was on a budget, and besides you are in New York, thehotel is the last place you are supposed to be!

you have to pay for internet (which disappointed me a little), but the staff were great about storing our bags themselves instead of using lockers when we had to check out and wait til much later for our flight, the concierge was very well informed too. all in all not a bad stay.

Amazing location, great value, good hotel!

In October 2010, we visited New York City with a family of five. After doing a lot of internet searching, we ended up at the Hotel St James. Having read a number of very negative reviews, we were fairly concerned.. which was absolutely unnecessary! As long as you don't have extremely high standards, this is the hotel for you!

What do we mean by extremely high standards? Well, the elevator is a little slow, the hallways are just plain ugly, and the rooms don't have a giant plasma tv but just a good old crt instead; if that does not bother you, you're good! (how much time are you going to spend hanging around in the hallway anyway!?)

Continuing with the important things, we found the room to be more spacious than we expected based on the reviews. Every day, housekeeping cleaned our room and supplied us with fresh towels and such. There was no sign of bedbugs whatsoever. The best part of this hotel is definately its staff. Everyone at the frontdesk is very friendly. In particular, we want to thank Mark for all his help; we couldn't have wished for a better service!

As you can read in all the other reviews, the deli next door serves a great breakfast. If this is your first visit to New York, make sure to get tickets for the hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tours. Also, make sure to get tickets for the red buses instead of the blue ones, since the red offer more tours for less money. Finally, there is a free transfer ferry called the Staten Island Ferry, which will give you a great view of Manhattan as well as get you close to the Statue of Liberty.

In conclusion, the Hotel St James is an outstandingly located, cheap and basic hotel that has all the important things just right.

The room was very dark; couldn't see in the closet at all; no ice; no kleenex; no in-room or in-lobby coffee; We were cold and the heat to the building had not been turned on; There was a hole in the floor under the carpet that created a trip hazzard. Overall very aging and not updated. Location was great and perhaps for the money some things could be overlooked. No heat and trip hazzard in the middle of the floor seemed excessive.

We stayed at the St James Hotel for a week in October and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who just needs a clean, comfortable hotel to stay in in Midtown Manhattan. Front desk service was generally efficient, courteous and one member of staff was particularly helpful when we asked advice on places to eat. The room was large, clean and the double beds slept two comfortably and we got a good night's sleep every night. Contrary to the recently publicised problem afflicting New York hotels there were no bed bugs here. The hotel is within a few hundred yards of Times Sq and access to anything we needed as tourists. There is a cafe next door and a deli beside that both of which serve good US style food all day at very reasonable prices - we took breakfast at the deli almost every day. Eating dinner in this part of town generally cost us $100 - $120 for the the three of us including wine and service. By walking a few blocks we were able to do a lot better than that. The bus tours and the NY City Pass are really good value especially for a relatively short stay.

This is the second time in 3 years that we stayed at the Hotel St. James. You cannot beat the location. It's within walking distance to the theatres, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and great restaurants (O'Lunney's, Connolly's, Havana Central, and the Cranberry Deli) are all within a block or two. Since we were there last time, the lobby has been remodeled, and the rooms updated. If you check prices online, you will see that the prices here are considerably cheaper than anywhere else. We will definitely stay here again everytime we go to NY. It's great!
