This is a gem of a hotel, we found staying here a really pleasant experience. The location could not be better & we found all the staff extremely friendly, courteous & helpful. I agree with another reviewer that the decor is a little "tired" but if you want 5* luxury then you have to be prepared to pay the prices. This hotel is kept very clean, the staff are brilliant and the location superb - what more could you want for the price? I would definetly recommend it & would have no hesitation in returning.

Room Tip: we had a room on the inside which meant less noise, it was also less light which helped us sleep lon...

This is a charming little hotel just off Times Square. The decor is a little "tired", but it is clean, close to subway and late night delis. It was a great base for our trip. The cleaning staff were very prompt and thorough, and the front desk staff were absolutely wonderful! I would stay there again.

Room Tip: We were on the 4th floor - the window faced on a building so we had little light. That was not a pro...

Dear TripNL,

Thank you for your review. Feedback is important for us to improve our service.

We have rooms on every floor facing outside, not only the top floors. We are very happy to accept requests -if you make a reservation, you can make a note, call us or email us asking for a room facing outside and although we cannot guarantee it, we try to honour all our requests- however, we do advise that rooms facing outside are usually a little bit noisier than the rooms facing inside -all of them have windows but, as you mention, most of the rooms are facing a small inside patio which is quieter.

Best regards,

Daniel de Plantagenet

I took my daughter to New York for a finishing High School treat. We spent more time than anticipated in the hotel room due to hurricane Irene.
Although it's quite old, we found the hotel to be clean and comfortable. The location is excellent, especially for somebody with reduced mobility such as myself, it being very close to Times Square and a few blocks from several of the iconic attractions. There's a great 24 hour deli next door but one.
The reception staff were helpful and responded promptly to an issue with the air con unit.
That was due to rain hammering against the metal unit outside the bedroom window which kept us awake one night. The short term fix was for the maintenance man to cover the unit with a towel. We slept soundly thereafter.
I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel as a low budget, well located placed to stay.

On arrival the male member of staff who had long hair , checked us in and was less than friendly. The room was small but fine for us. The bathroom was clean and the shower worked well.
The location was perfect! Literally less than a 2 minute walk which was very convenient.
Having to hand in the keys wasn't a problem to us, as this prevented us from loosing it!
We stayed there through Hurricane Irene and the earthquake and it kept us safe so to us that makes it great!
The lifts aren't as bad as other reviews have made out. I'm not a huge fan of lifts but I managed to stay calm!
The only flaws to the hotel were that most members of staff we'rent particularly friendly and only one spoke good English, the rest were foreign. We found it very unprofessional when some of the staff were drinking alcohol behind the desk, and also sometimes we could see that they were on Facebook & twitter! (Wish we all could get paid for going on our social networking sites!) One member of staff was American and made an effort with all customers and made us laugh when each time we came to collect our key, he'd guess our number and got it wrong every time.
Overall we enjoyed our stay at Hotel St James. This hotel is not for anyone who expects a lot, but for those who aren't fussy and just want a inexpensive roof to sleep under!

Room Tip: A room on about the 5th floor

Dear Kathryn,

Thank you for your review.
It's funny how half of our guests find the keys rather cool and half of them despise it thoroughly. It's one of our owners' little quirks; they like those keys a lot.

We're really lucky to be in a privileged location where our guests almost didn't feel the consequences of the catastrophes that have ravaged the East Coast lately, though it was a very tense period for all of us who worked at the hotel, having friends and families elsewhere and trying to be the buffering factor for our guests who were understandably as tense as us.

I will admit I did see the drinking. We are a very casual hotel and we do share a glass of champagne in New Year's Eve and Thanksgiving, though it usually happens in the office and it's only a glass. However, we have overlooked it this time because of the special situation: we had all the staff that worked those days living in the hotel since they could not get home by any means (they volunteered to work, which is lucky or the hotel would have not been manned during New York City's shutdown).
I can assure you it's not a usual occurrence.

As I have mentioned, we are a very casual hotel and our relationship with guests is usually quite pleasant to the point that some of our usual guests are Facebook friends of ours and make reservation requests through Facebook... very uncommon but we are very uncommon ourselves.
Facebook is not our usual tool for working but since it was right on the week of the hurricane and the earthquake, as you noted, we had to make sure that they could communicate with their families, both in the US and abroad, during the times of danger (there are two US born citizens working the front desk and the rest are a mixed bunch -which we love because it allows us to communicate with guests in more languages including Spanish, Polish, Russian, Italian and Portuguese... though the last two rather shakily).
Social media is not encouraged at this hotel but since it has become somewhat of a tool for us, we do not forbid it unless it interferes with our work, which I hope didn't happen.
We believe in Rousseau's theory that if everyone spent all their working hours really working, life would be unbearable. We try to create a more relaxed work environment.

Those are the explanations about the little issues that you mention.
Overall, I must say the overview of your hotel would mostly coincide with mine. As Joey (he's the one that tries to guess the room numbers) puts it: we're a cheap, clean no-frills hotel in the middle of Times Square.
:D

I stayed at St. James on July with my parents, children and husband. When we arrived we had a good surprise, although it's wasn't time to check in yet, they allowed us to get one of the rooms. The other wasn't ready, and the staff helped us to choose the better for 4. The location of the hotel is fantastic. The rooms were also very good. The price was unbelievable, the slowest we've found at that neighborhood.
Tips:
1) Room 612 is big and comfortable;
2) There is a Duane Reade very close (at Avenue of Americas) with good items for breakfast.

Room Tip: 612 was excellent

Nothing much to add to the other reviews on here really. Clean basic old-style hotel very close to Time Square.Newly decorated room of reasonably good size, with a comfortable bed, good bedding and white towels.Abundant supply of hot water in the bathroom, which had a shallow bath and shower. The door lock had a knack to it, there were no curtains/blackouts at the windows but blinds, the air conditioning unit was noisy, there were no tea/coffee making facilities or clock and not much of a view from the windows but very good for the price paid.Cranberry deli two doors down very convienient for breakfast or the odd cup of tea/quick snack. Would recommend, unless you want a hotel with the wow factor-in which case pay more and go somewhere like the Sheraton Towers!
