“Tasteful luxury”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2013

Not over the top luxury, but luxurious indeed. We typically stay downtown, but for events at the Lincoln Center, MONY is a fabulous place to stay uptown. Moderate, typical king room with generous size bathrooms - double sinks in NYC. Beautiful views: even numbers west for the river and sunset, even numbers high floors Central Park south. Front desk and bellman service impeccable. We did feel "over-sold" in the lounge for late night dinner upon arrival. Bottle water when we asked for tap, 2 entrees when we asked to share, two extra wines when we wanted to share. Caught in the excitement of arriving we let it go but definitely were aware. Same with room service. If I ask for coffee and specific fruit, no I don't want juice, rolls etc.

Room Tip: High floors and choose your view. Even numbers overlook the river.

First the plus points: superb views, a great Bar, excellent gym and swimming pool and a very good restaurant. Service isn't as faultless as you would expect from a Mandarin Oriental or at these rates - for example, we weren't shown to our room on being checked in (and with a 1300 dollar nightly rate that might be what you could expect).

We stayed in MONYC for 5 nights as a whole it was a nice stay however some rooms for improvement.

What we like
Location:
Close to all the places you want to check out. Right across Central Park. If shopping is your thing, here you have Sephora, William Sanoma, Moleskin, Pinks to name a few in the same building.

Room decoration:
A fine size with well-appointed bathroom. Our room has a lovely view of Hudson river. I love decoration combining Chinese touch with contemporary elements. Colour scheme goes from beige, brown with the accent of dark red.. bringing together luxury and comfort.

Staff:
Nice and attentive. concierge is very helpful!! :)

Room Service:
Wonton noodle soup was tasty. All what I wanted for night snack.

Here are the hard parts

Fitness centre:
Due to the limited space of the gym, I wish for more variety of the machines and free weights for ladies. Staff at the gym are very attentive. Pool was closed for maintenance for the entire period of our stay.

Breakfast:
Lovely restaurant overlooking Central Park. Food can be improved. I had been craving for Asian food for a while so I ordered "Mandarin Oriental" set which comes with Congee, dumplings.. Well if you look for an authentic taste, do not order it. Dumpling was chewy and uneatable.

Room:
Forgot to replenish the bathroom amenities and mini bar for many days. Rain shower switch was broken.

Look forward to the improvements and better stay next visit.

I was a little reluctant to stay in the tower above the Columbus Circle Centre but if you want views, ours from the 56th floor was breathtaking. Staying was an event in itself, particularly watching the sunrise. The one bedroom corner suite was very comfortable but the bathroom was missing some sparkle I would say - common of large chain brands. The suite overall lacks some of the luxurious details of the Dorchester Group hotels for example or even the Firmdale Group hotels in London. That said, if the prices weren't so eye watering (not just the room but the restaurant too) I would consider this a 4.5 star rating and recommend to first or second time visitors to NYC.

What's to say? If you're looking for a luxury hotel, you could do far worse than the Mandarin in NYC. Great location, staff and amenities. Will stay here every time. The only tricky thing is that our GPS had us driving around Columbus Circle looking for it when it's the entrance is on the south side of W 60th just east of Broadway.

Room Tip: Try and get the park view!

everything was exceptional from check in to departure. I had emailed the hotel to say it was my wife's 50th birthday celebration surprise & on check in they upgraded our already decent room (& rate as booked via BA with flight) to a Central Park view from the 48th floor, amazing! Polite staff everywhere to assist with little questions on travel around NYC. I would be astounded if clients had much to complain about from my 3 night experience but i guess some people always look to find a fault - ok some chap called Trump has a massive tower block in front on the hotel but far enough away to not spoil the view....we had meals booked as presents so didn't eat at the hotel but restaurant looked excellent and along with bar (great wines) the view was simply the best. I would be annoyed to see any complaints against this exceptional hotel where customers come first - what training course had the staff been on as some hotels could learn!!

Room Tip: Central Park views are amazing but Hudson river fab too..

My wife and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary at this magnificent property. To say we were treated as royalty doesn't do justice to our experience. I had mentioned the reason for our visit to the reservations agent and it seemed the entire hotel knew why we were visiting. to celebrate our arrival the hotel sent up strawberries and wine, as well as a delicious chocolate cake. our spa services were also outstanding and spa reception also knew we were there to celebrate our anniversary.

its no secret that hotels in NYC are not cheap and certainly the Mandarin is on the high end. but we felt it was money well spent especially as we tried to make our visit extra special. we spent even more and upgraded to a magnificent suite overlooking central park. if you want to enjoy an extra special visit to NYC, visiting the wonderfully located Mandarin Oriental is well worth the effort.

Room Tip: Corner suite with a view of Central Park is worth the expense. Ask for high floor as NYC can be qui...
