“Luxury in the Sky”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2012

I love the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in NY, I think people underestimate the luxury of overlooking the beautiful Central Park from your coffee table at breakfast, surrounded by sky scrapers. Located at the Columbus Circle, this complex has one of the most luxurious locations someone could desire. It is pricey, the rooms are NY standard so do not expect Tokyo there, but still good and comfortable, the service is good and classy. The bars are cool, and the breakfast was my favorite time of the day.

My wife and I stayed for 5-nights in a Central Park View Room. On arrival, we were greeted by the door staff before heading up to the lobby on the 35th floor. the view striked you straight away as you look through the lobby onto the floor to ceiling windows overlooking Central Park.

The Reception staff were outstanding (recognised our Geordie accents and talked about Newcastle United and Liverpool FC with great knowledge) and gave us a higher room due to our 5-night stay. The room itself was very well decorated and felt clean and fresh. We've stayed in a number of 'high-end' hotels in NYC and this beats them all - and at half the price of some of the others. It might not have the history of the Pierre, Carlyle or Astoria, but being a Brit, century old buildings with old fashioned decor aren't something I crave for (being it's all we see at home), so bright and modern was perfect for us.

Plenty of the water in the room each day, good range of TV channels, fantastic bathroom with sunflower head shower and bath, robes for both etc. Pretty much everything you'd expect and very well done.

The breakfasts in Asiate were amazing, as was the light snacks served in the lounge. All staff were friendly and approachable - the opposite to some hotels where the brand has gone to the staffs heads and they act like Lord and Lady of the Manor e.g. snooty and aloof. The team at the MO are professional, but down-to-earth - the perfect mix.

Location wise, the MO sits atop of the Time Warner, with its huge food court, high end shops, coffee bars and wealth of restaurants, including the famous Per Se that the concierge helped us book into. The subway hub sits 25-mteres away, whilst your in Central Park within 30-seconds of leaving the front door.

Price wise, the hotel is what you'd expect. It's not astronomical for a breakfast and coffee, but it isn't McDonalds either. For breakfast for two with coffee, water and orange, we paid around $70 at the most. You're looking at similair prices for a light bite in the lounge overlooking Central Park. We didn't dine on the evenings, so we can't comment here.

We also had use of the house car, which was available quite a few times, but we only sought out once. Again, a good service experience.

We won't be staying anywhere else in NYC from now on.

Room Tip: Central Park view if possible

We have stayed in a number of high quality hotels in NYC, however non of them can hold a candle to The Mandarin Oriental. From our arrival to our departure we were so well looked after without people being overbearing. The room was stylish, clean and of th highest standard, we had a park view which was delightful at any time of day or night! The concierge were fantastic and even managed to get us reservations at Per Se & Club 21. We ate in the hotel a number of times for breakfast & lunch. The View from Asiate was amazing as were the buttermilk pancakes, but then again everything we ate or drank in the hotel was amazing. If your looking for a modern, quality hotel then MO is top of my list!

Thanksgiving in New York with all the trimmings was a dream come true for our family this year.
We range in age from 60+ to 4 years old so picking the hotel meant accomodating a wide variety of interests and tastes. Happily, we found perfection at the Mandarin Oriental. First if all, it is a wonderful location for watching the Macy's parade. Central Park is at your doorstep for those who wish to run as well as those who prefer a playground. The pool on the 36th floor welcomed children and provided a lovely afternoon break from the sightseeing, ice skating, and shopping.
Best of all was the pampering five star luxury combined flawlessly with a child friendly attitude.
Whether pouring a fine chablis or fixing the lid on a glass of milk, the wait staff out did themselves. Housekeeping was impeccible. The concierge was available for every request (including a seamtress to alter a "just bought it but must wear it on Thanksgiving" dress.)
The top floor corner suite, 5416, has a breathtaking view. I could go on and on.
BTW, if you are thinking about Thanksgiving book early.....very early.

We stayed overnight to celebrate my birthday this month. Given its reputation, and the price tag, I expected our stay to be a truly special experience. I was disappointed. It was a clean room, bur on the small side and very minimalist. We had requested a down free room and had to have housekeeping come twice to remove everything. When we checked in, we were told that we would not need a reservation for breakfast, but the next morning, were told we could be seated, but that others had reservations so we would have to leave in an hour. We then waited for 45 mins for our meals and had to rush to eat them. The breakfast prices were exorbitant as well. The swimming pool was chilly, and not enjoyable. For the quality and service we received, it was on par with a regular chain hotel, no special touches.

Stayed for just one night this time. Upgraded to beautiful corner suite. Linens toiletries and room set up all suitable for a 5 star experience. Check in was efficient. Lobby bar and lounge area have spectacular views and solid food. Look forward to staying there again.
Only negative is it is a modern hotel in a modern building. So you dont get that old school, old New York feel like you do at the Waldorf, Carlyle, Plaza etc.
Time Warner Center and the shopping and restaurants is a nice bonus too.

This was our second stay at this hotel. Our first experience was terrific and this one was mixed.

The hotel is wonderfully situated, the building is beautiful and we love the contemporary design of the rooms/lobby/lounge. The hotel begins on the 35th floor which makes for a spectacular view of the city from any room. We especially love the floor-to-ceiling windows in all the rooms. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton Central Park before and although it is a very nice hotel, it is in an older building so the windows are much smaller and there are only 12 or 15 floors, so you really can't see much of Central Park or the city.

Breakfast was part of our package and everyday the food was delicious and service was very good.

There is a beautiful lounge on the 35th floor which has a great design and fantastic views of the city and central park. Unfortunately we did not have access to it for any of the 4 nights we stayed there as it was rented out for private parties. The lounge would be a terrific location for drinks before dinner...or any time. The fact that it was not available to the hotel's normal guests for 4 nights in a row is unacceptable in my opinion. I certainly understand the hotel's desire to make additional money from renting out the space, but renting it out everyday shows an indifference to the experience of their normal guests.

We also experienced some inconsistent service and follow up at the front desk.

Room Tip: We have stayed in both Central Park View and Premier Central Park view. I think splurging for centr...
