“Needs some updating but still very good option”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2012

This is the second time I stayed here and from the first time I visited (2004) it seems they have not updated much. Rooms lack some maintenance on the doors and furniture yet the bathroom is ample and very functional.

Service is great when taking orders and always kind and courteous but sometimes when ordering food, they made their own decisions and change some ingredients on the dishes, nevertheless the quality of the food its outstanding.

Location its unbeatable but they can work on getting a better organization at the motor lobby as sometimes getting on/off transportation had to take place on third row on the street!

Glad to see some celebrities like Federer and Bruce Willis at the lobby. This tells you that it has not loosen its charm at all and I still recommend staying there.

Room Tip: High rooms have better view but sometimes elevators get crowded so If you don't have a room on t...

I was suprisingly disappointed with this hotel. My family and I did a two-day excursion to New York and wanted to stay near shows and Gallagher's restaurant (which we love, but that's another review). Our travel agent works with clients who expect the best, and booked us a one bedroom suite with another adjoining bedroom. When we arrived, nothing was ready. The suite we eventually were given was the wrong room type, and the "connecting" room was non-existant. They did move us to a suite that was an upgrade, but we had to settle for a second room that was next door, not connecting.

Aside from the errors, I just didn't like this hotel. If you want to be in the action on the West Side, the location is wonderful, and some of the rooms have great views. However, the first suite we were given had floor to ceiling glass at a sharp, pointed angles (terrible for anyone afraid of heights), and severely modern furnishings. It came across as cold and harsh rather than luxurious, and I love contemporary decor. Not this one.

In addition, it felt like they "dumped" us in the room. None of the amenities arranged by the travel agent were present (a little snack, sometimes flowers), and although they knew the accommodations were wrong, we were told just to wait there. Overall, we didn't get a "welcoming" feeling in this hotel at all. New York is one of those cities where it's important for me to feel the hotel is our "oasis" in the big city. These were VERY expensive accommodations, and couldn't compare with the Four Seasons, new Ritz Carlton or any number of other fine New York hotels in this category. At this price, it should have five stars.

This is truly a lovely hotel with excellent rooms, beautiful views, incredible food (we had breakfast every day), gracious service and a prime location on the park. No additional photos need to be posted to show the fantastic vistas from the rooms, bar and restaurant. All rooms are above the 35th floor, so whether you pick a Central Park view or a Hudson River view, you will not be disappointed. I was with my husband in a park view, and my parents were in a corner Hudson view room. Both rooms were spotless, and the attention to details in the decor of the rooms was very nice. The Mandarin is located adjacent a station where 5 subway lines converge, so you can literally go anywhere in Manhattan from there withiut changing trains.

It's nice to come back to a hotel after a long day walking around and feel instantly relieved. That is the vibe of this hotel. Quiet soothing rooms, and a comfortable bar and airy restaurant above the fray. I was hesitant to book here seeing the ranking on TripAdvisor, but I am glad that I did. We were thinking of the Trump, but I didn't care for the lack of public spaces. Mandarin is a great choice right next door.

First time in the Mandarin New York after getting tired of the Trump but still wanted a park view.

Pros:
Lovely room (premier central park view suite,) great front desk and prompt service.

Cons:
Light burned out in the bathroom, in room fridge was warm and not cooling. All minor and annoying, but the topper was when my wife complained that the bathrobe smelled like someone else. I put mine on, put and found a condom in the pocket (unused.) They had never cleaned them. It made me look closely at the sheets and wonder if anyone is managing housekeeping.

Fail:
I filled out the "how was your visit" guest survey and as of now, two weeks later, never had a response from management.

Although the Mandarin Oriental in New York City commands a hefty price, it is SO worth it. Every aspect of the hotel is wonderful - the view, the simplicity of the rooms, the food and the staff - all of them - fabulous. Can't wait to return!

Great views. The best bathrooms so far in New York. And also great location since there is a subway and a mall right below. Also not to forget central park.
We had great breakfast and also excellent dinner at the same restaurant. This is our second stay at this hotel and will always return back since it has the best of everything.

The hotel works overtime to ensure that each guest receives flawless service. We spent a weekend in a room overlooking Central Park. The restaurant is very good as is the lounge. However, the service is impeccable and makes the stay an experience. They spa facilities are terrific as well. Strongly recommended for a stay in NYC. Congratulations to Mr. Groessing on an exceptional property.
