Firstly I would tell anyone if you take this tour add the option for the soul food lunch. They pick you up on a nice bus near Time Square and then drive around Harlem to get an idea of the neighbourhood and hear about it's history. Then it was off to church, the people at the Greater Highway Temple where wonderful and I really enjoyed the music, my only complaint was we left before the reverend spoke. Then we went to the Cotton Club for soul food and a gospel ban. The buffet was excellent bring your appetite and I found out how good do you have to be to sing at the Cotton Club. You have to be awesome.

Overpriced for a 30 minute our finally ending up in harlem A meal of soul food at Sylvias and then taken to Cotton club!

The once famous Cotton club us a mere reflection of a vibrantb jaz venue. for a l;ook at a very run down "dive" On entry the overpowering SMELL of buffet diguises the run down state of the ven. . The club is filled with tourists and lacks authenticity.
Back on the bus to be dropped off at quite some distance from our hotel in pouring rain Duty of care Nill (We had been promised a hotel drop off )
I suggest looking at other jaz tours or make enquiries about a more realistic jaz experience !

Alternatively book Sylvia's - Queen of Soul Food
www.sylviassoulfood.com and take a taxi

We took the Wednesday tour bus from 8th Ave at 9am and for the first couple of hours I'm afraid to say that I was disappointed. Although personable enough, our guide's narration was not great - she jumped about from one subject and one era in Harlem's history to another, with no obvious links and more than the odd bit of repetition. By the time we'd been talked at for 30 minutes parked up opposite the Apollo, it was all becoming a bit dull.

Then we arrived at the church and the fun started! The service was uplifting, the choir inspiring and although neither of us is particularly religious, we came away feeling much the better for the experience. Sure, there was the inevitable collection and sales pitch for the CDs but this was done with humour and no obligation so we were fine with that.

From the church, we went to Sylvia's for our first experience of soul food, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The catfish wasn't to our liking but everything else was! The corn bread was delicious, as was the chicken and the ribs. We probably wouldn't have had the confidence to visit a soul food restaurant on our own so this was a great way of trying something new and enjoying the company of new acquaintances whilst we did so.

This excursion wasn't cheap but we felt we'd got reasonable value for money. If the "pre-church" bit could be structured better or even perhaps shortened, I think the overall tour package would be greatly improved. Still worth doing as it is though - just stick with it.

We visited family in New York and this tour was the best evening of our trip.
More than excellent Our tour guide Peggy made the tour interesting and entertaining. She was very thoughtful to the individual needs. Overall dInner at Sylvia's was good and gave us a chance to taste more than one dish. the cornbread was amazing. On the negative side, essert was a little rushed. We then went to a small club off the beaten path with an amazing band and soulful singer. People were dancing outside. really a lot of fun and worth the money spent.

Our tour occurred on a Wednesday, our choice. We hopped on the bus at the designated location and had 4 hours of history and Gospel singing. The Gospel choir portion of the tour lasted an hour, great voices and excellent interfacing with the public attending the presentation. The balance of the three hours was a tour of Harlem with quite a bit of historical facts being given to us. I would recommend the tour to anyone.
