As a local family we usually come in for the day, or stay with relatives, so don't have much experience with NYC hotels, but oddly in November we had two occasions that cried out for a couple of nights in a hotel (an audition and a wedding). We chose the Hampton Chelsea for both because it is convenient to Penn Station, and comparatively inexpensive. Plus it's close to the subway. The rooms and bathrooms are tiny, but everything is clean and well finished. Cookies in the lobby are a nice touch, and the complimentary breakfast (6 - 10 am) is pretty good, although it varies. One morning the "omelette" was eggs folded over a slice of American cheese, another day it was a delicious western omelette. On a Friday morning there was no sausage or bacon. Other mornings they offered turkey sausage, or bacon. The pastries are good. The coffee is really good! The staff is super. They will check your bags for you, no charge, if you arrive early or need to do something after you check out. And...cabs stop in front of the hotel frequently, very nice. They offer car service to the airport starting at $45. A good place.

Let me preface this by saying that this review is for a Hampton Inn (not the Waldorf) in Manhattan (where it is well known that space is limited.) Hampton Inn's are "budget-friendly" hotels and hotel rooms in Manhattan are tiny.

This particular property is so well located - outside of hustle and bustle of Times Square or far too distant Battery Park/lower tip of Manhattan where so many hotels are located. This hotel is located on a commercial strip of W 24th street - off the avenues - so it's quiet. However, it is so close to the Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Avenue subways at 23rd Street as well as the bus routes on all the avenues (and visitors should not be afraid of the NYC buses -- they're a wonderful way to see the City).

We had a 17th floor room with two queen beds and a view of Liberty Tower. Spring for the Cityview rooms. Two elevators were working (although shared with staff) and fast. We never had to wait more than a few minutes and were in over Thanksgiving week when the hotel appeared close to full. The beds were comfortable, the linens were fine (perhaps a bit worn as the down in the duvets bunched up a bit)/blankets warm (and the extra blankets a nice touch), the windows opened and the thermostat was operable and accurate. The bathroom was typical NYC with a single sink and a tub/shower combo (and toilet of course.) Small but well appointed. Despite the curved shower bar, it was difficult not to get the floor wet though. Only complaint (and we were for five days and this was true every day) was that the white towels were gray and many a bit too worn. They needed to be replaced/bleached.

The complimentary breakfast was good. There were two make your own waffle grills, always some type of an egg dish and bacon or sausage or potatoes. There was cereal and oatmeal, juices, yummy coffee, tea and hot chocolate (all day long as a matter of fact), pastries, toast/bagels and fresh fruit. The breakfast area was well staffed and open until 10 am (which is late for a hotel breakfast.) The porter was there emptying garbage cans and cleaning up constantly (and I saw that man several times working hard delivering towels to the housekeeping staff, tidying up, etc. He was clearly an asset to that hotel.) An atrium type room was opened for seating during breakfast (used for storing luggage otherwise) and we always got a seat (and were able to catch up on CNN on the wide screen televisions mounted on the walls.)

I'd say the best thing about this hotel though was the staff. They were not only friendly, but they were accommodating. This was true for every staff member we encountered. On check in, because there was a slight delay in getting us into a room, Stefan could not have been more professional and apologetic. He treated my girls (to whom he gave some gummy bears - always a treat) and me so kindly that we forgot that we had to wait a bit (again - in the breakfast area with fresh fruit and coffee/hot chocolate so it was hardly an inconvenience.) Any time we had a question, needed coins for the laundry (and yes, this is one of the only non-suite hotels I could find that still has a self serve coin washer/dryer which enables my family and I to "travel light" and just do a load of laundry or two when we're away), asked to have our luggage held after check out (NO CHARGE by the way), questioned the bill, etc., it was handled in such a "we're here to help" manner that I was truly impressed.

Finally, the price for this hotel was reasonable by NYC standards.

Great location, good night's sleep, good breakfast, outstanding staff and fair price -- this Hampton Inn is going to become our "go to" hotel when we're in NYC.

The Hampton Inn in Chelsea New York City is a great hotel. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Staff was great and the free breakfast was very good as well. Chelsea is a great area to stay. You are still in Manhattan but your away from all the noise and congestion if you are staying in Times Square. Subway station close and taxi's are plenty. The only concern is if you need a refrigerator in your room you may not get one. I requested one month before we were to arrive. When we checked in I found out they only have one mini room fridge and it was still being used by someone else so I did not get to use it. So if you have medication that requires being kept in fridge or you have baby formula/milk that needs to be kept cold you may not get the fridge you requested. My one request to Hampton Inn is make fridge's standard in each room as they do in other Hampton Inn's elsewhere. Patty M Hunt

Having stayed at this particular hotel several times, it has been a more than pleasant experience each time and between the quality of the hotel and its location, it is my preferred location when staying in the city.

Nice Location, right in Chelsea and close to 3 different subway location to explore the city easily, Hot buffet breakfast and coffee tea and cookies all day long. Very friendly and responsible staffs, they changed my room in my request in just a minute, they provided me the fridge I asked to be added to my room in just 5 min. Hampton Inn is always the best in value and quality

This Hampton Inn is located in a great location near Madison Square Park and close to many subway lines. The hotel had a free breakfast which we found to be very good although basic. The breakfast was a great way to start the day and had fruits, cereal, hot breakfast items, waffle maker and more. The breakfast room was small but we never really had a problem finding a table. Sometimes there were AMAZING chocolate cookies in the lobby as well :) Rooms were average (small) size for Manhattan but very comfortable. Staff and service were pleasant and efficient but didn't over do it.

If you are interested in shopping/antiques definitely check out the garage antique sale across the street. (on weekends)

Room Tip: Try to get a room away from the elevator.

Superb location on 24th with the 23rd Street subways a short walk away and a Whole Foods and Starbucks at the end of the road. Very friendly welcome, clean and comfortable accommodation, breakfast, cookies, coffee and tea all day and business centre for check in and printing boarding passes. The staff couldn't be more helpful - have stayed before and would stay again - the experience has been consistently good.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the lower the street sound - I prefer the front for better views.
