“Affordable, Clean and Friendly Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013

It's my first time in US and I decided to join my colleagues and visit New York. We managed to have found this tiny hotel located next to China Town in lower Manhattan. An affordable hotel which comes with private bathrooms. We arrived the hotel (at Forsyth Street near Grand Street) around 4 p.m. The check-in was smooth and the staff at the counter was very helpful. We booked 3 rooms and they were all equipped with one standard twin bed and an extra bed. The room is tiny (yet sufficiently spacious for two person), clean and tidy, with basic hygenic products (toothpaste, soap, cap etc.) provided. One of the room has a minor leakage issue and the rest are fine. Hot drinking water is served at the counter on the ground floor. The subway (B-D lines) is just around the corner and you can change to A, C, E lines at W 4th Street, to visit most of the mid / lower Manhattan. The China Town, Little Italy are only a few blocks away. The neighbourhood speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin and it makes Windsor Hotel a good choice for Chinese speaking tourists. We stayed there for 3 days and travelled almost all the sightseeing areas below 82th street (mid Manhattan), except Soho. A good choice especially for Chinese.

My husband and I decided to book two hotels in NY: the first one we booked (and stayed) was quite near the Times Square. (We were satisfied with that one, too.) We wanted our second hotel to be in lower Manhattan because the tour agency which took us to Washington DC would drop us off near Chinatown. The Windsor Hotel seemed to be a good choice with its reasonable price and available rooms. The Windsor Hotel is in Chinatown and one block away from Little Italy. It’s close to subway stations, and a variety of restaurants. We enjoyed several restaurants (Malaysian, Vietnamese, Chinese and Italian.) It's within walking distance to Soho, Wall Street and the Financial District. (We are in our early forties and like walking.) Our room was clean and bigger than the one in the other hotel. I cannot remember any disturbing noise at night. There is free wi-fi and tea/coffee making facilities in the lobby. (There was low or no wi-fi reception in the room. No problem, though.) If you want a sandwich in the morning or late at night, there is a deli at the corner (just one minute away from the hotel). The staff was friendly and helpful. If you want to be out in the city rather than in your hotel room, and wish not to spend too much on the hotel, this is the right place. :)

The windsor hotel is within easy walking distance to Manhattan Bridge and a little bit further the Brooklyn Bridge. The Grand subway stop is a block away which makes uptown very accessible. The B and D trains will get you to broadway, times square, the rock, Museum of Natural History and more. If you dont plan on spending much time in your hotel this is a great option for the budget minded. On the border of Chinatown and Little Italy it is situated in a interesting but safe neighborhood. If traffice noise bothers you then just turn on the fan at night.

This hotel could easily rate higher by just replacing the mattresses and pillows. The property is well kept, the rooms were clean, but the beds were the cheapest imaginable and difficult to sleep in. The location is great, right next to Chinatown and Little Italy. Very quiet, sitting right next to a small park. Metro entrance 100m down the street. Walking distance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Staff was very friendly. A great bargain for NYC hotels, if you can sleep on an Army mattress.

We needed a place to stay to catch an early flight so we didn't want to spend a lot. I think my wife found the Windsor on hotel.com so we weren't sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. The rooms are small - but that is to be expected in a big city - but they were clean and nice and the staff had a car waiting for us at 4:15 a.m. When staying in NYC, it's hard not to spend a ton on lodging. This place wasn't cheap but considering the horror stories of cheap hotels in the city, it was definitely nice! As for price, the walk-up price is quite a bit more than the online hotel sites quote so worth the extra effort.

Room Tip: Our room had a double and a single for three people, which was fine for one night and kept the price...

After flying in from Australia via Seoul (24 + hours) we arrived at the hotel with vouchers in hand, eager for a bath and bed, only to be told that our reservations had been cancelled! When questioned, the staff member said 'someone' had called and cancelled our rooms twice, first on the 8th then 11th December. We did no such thing. And who would call twice to cancel? Dodgy hotel! When we asked if they could call a taxi for us the non-English speaking staff kept saying "hotel full, you go find other hotel" Never returning here!

Room Tip: Service was non existent except to tell us there was no room for us.

A pretty basic hotel for that kind of money. Bed was ok, bathroom was tiny, faucet wasn't easy to operate, room was all in all pretty small, there's a desk there with a chair, but you could hardly sit on it as you were so close to the bed. Room was very clean though!
