Diners can enjoy the wonderful cuisine in the restaurant’s dining hall that has a modern ambiance with a touch of classic French influence, or at the garden patio during the summer months, all the while retaining its casual and classy atmosphere.

“Fabulous kidneys and magical hidden garden”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

Old style French where they still serve offal...hurrah! The kidneys in mustard sauce were a treat. Likewise the duck pate...not PC but wonderful nonetheless. The outside garden in the rear of this small place is perfect for a romantic tryst or long conversations. Good wine at reasonable prices. The service is correct without being obtrusive.

“A very nice evening with good food”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

We went there on a groupon on a rainy weekday evening so the place was not fully packed. We could not sit in the garden, unfortunately, but had a wonderful spot by the widely open window (much more pleasant than annoying A/C). The service was attentive without being intrusive, and the meal went at a nicely slower pace. Our romantic dinner lasted over an hour and a half, which was perfect timing, because we find nothing so annoying as restaurants trying to rush you through your meal and out within the overall average of 30-40 minutes.

We tried their crab Napoleon as appetizer, which was very delicate and tasty. As we read that this place is based on hearty meat fare, we got ready for some, and ended up ordering lamb and chateaubriand. The lamb was perfectly slow cooked and melted in the mouth. Now, I do not like blood in my meat and generally get a tough and barely edible piece when I order well done beef, but this time the meat was both well done and very soft. It was a pleasure to eat.

Desserts were a fantastic chocolate lava cake and floating island, both excellent and a great finish to our dinner.
All in all a beautiful and enjoyable dinner and evening. I totally recommend this place!

“Except for the music, it could have been Paris”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

French onion soup, mussels mariniere, tarte flambee, wine ... Jeanne and Gaston might have been located near the Opera Garnier in Paris ... instead of W14th St in NYC.
The food was quite good, the service was attentive. The indoor restaurant space is cozy, which would have been perfectly fine with a soft Parisienne accordion or a Keren Ann or Carla Bruni crooning in the background rather than American pop.
The venue also has an inviting garden space, open as weather permits. Definitely worth an initial try (prix fixe at the bar (?)) and a return visit.

“Very Good, but not terrific”
Reviewed May 26, 2013

Lovely little restaurant on W. 14th between 7th & 8th Aves, very good food, gracious staff. The space is a little tight and a large group with a loud and noisy kid sat right behind us, so the place felt a bit cramped. With a full restaurant, I found the noise level a little high and sometimes had difficulty hearing our friends sitting opposite us. The prix fixe of $40/person, for any appetizer, entree, dessert is really the best deal. However, we weren't that hungry and ordered 1 regular entree and the 29.00 prix fixe, which was much more limited (only 3 selections in each category). I enjoyed the food, found it well done but it didn't really excite me, so the cost seemed perhaps a bit high for the overall experience. The place is charming, though, and I'd love to go back and eat in the garden.

“At last...real French food!”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Being French, it is my "duty" to go and check out French restaurants. Most of them, unless extremely fancy, are very disappointing. As most of the reviews specify it here, the food was excellent and the prices extremely reasonable ... There was even a little live band playing some nice tunes. The place was not crowded but the atmosphere was friendly and laid back. Their apple desserts are delicious. The only problem we encountered during that evening was the waitress who came to ask us twice to remind her what we had ordered and still showed up with one wrong dish. It was good, however a little frustrating. I suppose she was new and not experimented. Still worth a try!
