Hard to review this place all at once because the bar scene is so different from the rest of the restaurant. The bar is inhabited by mostly 20-something girls mooning over the cocky bartenders. It's a place where the post collegiate get hammered and feel grown-up. If that sounds snarky then visit a couple of times and see for yourself.
The dining rooms in back are warm and comfortable. The food is solid but has it's misses. Our waiter described the Scottish salmon as "the best he's ever had". He should order that in more restaurants because it was far from that. It was skimpy and was not very fresh. The British staples like the meat pies and fish & chips fly out of the kitchen at a rapid pace and it seems like they need a little more attention. In general they seem to be "phoning it in". Needs something.

The first thing a Brit sees on entering this bar and restaurant is a handpump displaying the logo of Morland's "Old Speckled Hen" English fine ale - it is also on their beermats! This bodes well for any expat Brit living or visiting New York, and you won't be disappointed by the food or the service. Marvellous starters, mains, and puddings include "proper" fish and chips, a steak and kidney pie to savour, and kedgiree, which is so good you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd been transported to an English country house breakfast. It is a little pricey, but after all, you do get what you pay for. Splendid - especially for Sunday lunch!

At first thought, British food and the Upper East side don't necessarily equal culinary hot spot. But James Wood Foundry defies the stereotype. A self-declared"food-driven pub," this neighborhood restaurant evokes a chic English public house with an expansive wooden bar, communal tables and vintage furnishings. Even cozier than the decor is the menu, crafted by Cotswold-native Jason Hicks, which puts a gourmet twist on traditional fish n' chips, shepherd's pies and other typical British fare. I'm obsessed with the champagne cocktails. The head bartender, Stuart, makes them with extra bitters. Insane. Recently, I had a new addition to the cocktail menu, Italian Diplomat. Also stellar. Love the use of amaro. Don't plan on leaving without trying the Toasts menu either. The Toasts really show what Hicks can do in the kitchen. Favorites include the potted crab with citrus and tomato powder (!), salted cod, and Scottish egg. I didn't get into beer yet, but go for the Sam Smith Taddy Porter paired with their 'chips' -- ask for mayo to dip and you'll get bonus points with the best bartenders in the city.

Great place to come for really good selection of beer, wine, etc. Great beer on tap. Lambic beer that I haven't seen in many places outside of Belgium! Nice bubbly by the glass, wines by the glass. Not a sports bar per se, but they did put the Knicks on for us.....and it has the British thing going on!
