Owner description: Disney's NEWSIES, the breakout new American musical, is now on Broadway in New York City! The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’

A great performance. The actors were great singers, dances, and acrobats all in one. The story is easy to follow and the acting was excellent. Put it on yjour list of performances to see.

The dancing for the show is amazing! This is a fun show with lots of energy. It's based on the historical newsies strike. Great for kids and adults alike.

This musical at the Nederlander Theatre was so full of energy. The music and the dancing were so wonderful I found myself not wanting the performance to end. Corey Cott who starred as Jack has a great voice. I was also captivated by the young Evan Kasprzak who plays Elmer. He is so young and talented. Three cheers for the whole cast and crew. Newsies provided Broadway debuts for many of these young stars who exude an array of talent. I highly recommend this musical. It will be a night filled with great dancing and music. For those with leg and hip disabilties I recommend the first level (orchestra) seating or an aisle seat. The seating is cramped with very little leg room.

Was an informative play, but just average compared to many of the other shows we have seen. The Actors/actresses did a fine job...it is about a true event.

Great story, great energy, the most incredible dancing!
The set is not your typical over the top colorful spectacle of broadway, but it's clever and keeps your attention. It lets you focus on the characters and the dancing- which is just plain fun.
My husband and I took our two teenage sons and we all had a great time.
