Owner description: Disney's NEWSIES, the breakout new American musical, is now on Broadway in New York City! The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’

High energy, good times!! Theatre is older and not as comfy as some, but the energy and talent of the cast more than makes up for it. Good for all ages. Bravo!!

Fantastic show. Story, set pieces, and choreography are outstanding. Fast moving, seamless show that makes amazing use of space. Theater is comfortable with excellent sight lines. Very enjoyable show.

Seen more than a few shows in my day and this one was near the top. The dancing was flawless considering there was a large cast and a smaller stage. The actors were spot on with their lines and choreography. The story line was a great tale of early life in the US. I would go to see it again if I was back in NYC and it was up.

My daughter and I saw this over Thanksgiving weekend. It was a terrific musical - good music and great dancing. There were several actors in their broadway debut and they were just terrific. The theater is beautiful. We sat in the second row of the balcony and they were terrific seats. As others have said in their reviews a lot of the action is set up high and we felt like it was right in front of us. Someone once told me you will never regret a great seat in the theater so I have used that philosophy when choosing seats and so far it is very true!

I cannot say enough good things about this show! If you like Broadway shows with group dancing numbers then this is a show to see. I would see it again, it was that good. The tap number was one of my favorites. But man, do these boys have talent. Superb!
