Owner description: Disney's NEWSIES, the breakout new American musical, is now on Broadway in New York City! The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’

“A great show - dancing is fabulous!”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

Newsies is a great show - with fabulous dancing and choreography. As usual with musicals, the story is slightly unbelievable, and several of the wigs were pretty bad, but that did not spoil my overall enjoyment of the show!!!! The theatre was VERY HOT though - and we were in there in February. So make sure you wear layers!!!

“Excellent Broadway show”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

This show has enormous energy. The stars are making their broadway debut, however, given the quality of their performances they will remain broadway stars for many years to come. The story revolves around newspaper delivery boys (newsies) who fight the news per publisher (Pulitzer) for decent wages and working conditions. The music is very good, and the dancing and true energy are outstanding

“Newsies was the best!!!!!”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

I surprised my daughter for her birthday. Wasn't really sure which show to take her to, but boy am I ever glad I chose Newsies. I loved it as much as she did. The music was great and the dancing was amazing. I've seen quite a few shows this year, and this was by far the best. Wanna take my other daughters to see it. Aside from the show being great, the cast is very young, so after the show they were more than happy to meet their fans and sign autographs. My daughter got nine autographs and five pictures. She had the most amazing birthday. Go see it!!!!

“Good if you're in New York...great dancing but not up there with the greats”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

I really enjoyed the show, it was great to watch in NYC. My wife and I wanted to see something different, the theatre was great and we really enjoyed the show.

The dancing in the show was brilliant especially the tap dancing and group dance numbers, the songs and singing were OK but now 2 weeks later if you ask me to remember one, I'm sorry but I couldn't.

Overall, good but Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh can sleep easy....this isn't up there with the greats.

I flew all the way from Sao Paulo, Brazil to see this. All the money and time I spent on a two day trip to the other side of the world was totally worth it!!!
