Owner description: Disney's NEWSIES, the breakout new American musical, is now on Broadway in New York City! The musical, based on the beloved 1992 Disney movie musical of the same name, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). NEWSIES is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival). Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teen aged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right. NEWSIES is inspired by the real life "Newsboy Strike of 1899," when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of real life orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The original Disney film has morphed into a cult phenomenon with a generation of avid fans discovering the movie on VHS and DVD. The stage version introduces several brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’

I was recommended by a theatre going friend to see Newsies whilst in New York. I really loved it! It was well paced with great singing, strong male dancing and snappy set changes. The leads and cast were all good, and I agree that Specs steals many scenes. There werent any dull or slow bits, and a standing ovation completed the evening. A great musical about New York to see while you are there!

Got discount tickets at TKTS booth - the line moves pretty fast. Show has great talent, both singing and dancing. Got better and better as the show progressed. Stage sets were unique and much more fascinating than would have guessed just by looking at them before the show started. Was good to see this in NYC for the historical connection. Kids really did have to live and work in such horrible circumstances in those days. I enjoyed and appreciated this more than Lion King. Strongly encourage using the bathroom before arrival, and hope you don't need it at intermission, ladies.

We really enjoyed Newsies and from the response of the rest of the audience, they did too.

The music and dancing was very entertaining and the cast really seemed to enjoy what they were doing.

We would recommend this show to all audiences.

We got our tickets at the TKTS booth. We didn't get great seats, but we also didn't pay full-price, so it's ok.

The show was highly entertaining. The choreography was great and the music was good. Jeremy Jordan was no longer playing Jack Kelly when we saw the show, which was a bit of a disappointment, but the guy playing Specs, Ryan Steele steals the show.

I would highly recommend this show to anybody who enjoyed the movie and who wants to see amazing choreography and have a good time.

Keep an eye out for Ryan Steele. The kid is hard to miss.

This is a very high energy musical with lots of energetic dancing and very loud singing. The play is about the newsboy strike in 1899 and the working conditions were so poor that it brought Les Miserables to mind. The dances brought West Side Story to mind at times. The cast, of course, is mostly young men, and this brought out a younger demographic that seemed to thoroughly enjoy the show. As more of a senior citizen (63), I thought the dancing was good, the songs tuneful, if a bit on the shouting side, and the story entertaining. Worth seeing, but shouldn't be your first choice unless you are seeing it with your teenage daughter.
