Hyatt Place New York Midtown South
Ranked #152 of 470 Hotels in New York City
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 26, 2013

As the only property in NYC city that has a low enough category to be eligible for the free Hyatt credit card night, this property was our choice for a recent visit to NYC. The availability was excellent. The reservations were made less than a week prior to the visit, and there was no problem finding a room in the appropriate category which is more than I can say on most NYC hotels.

The hotel seems to be a converted apartment building like many other hotels in this range (low-mid range, with free internet and breakfast). As such one can expect to have few elevators, and little space for hotel amenities. As expected the hotels has only 2 elevators, which in the morning time can result in long waiting time (this time it was about 12 minutes). This is to be expected; however the cleaning staff using the same elevator, basically blocking it completely should be avoided during the morning rush hour.

Breakfast, as it is, was also a problem. I have come to slightly disappointed with the Hyatt Place breakfasts compared to the competitors. However, the big problem was the limited seating. In order to overcome this problem, there is a sign to wait to be seated. However this does not work very well. I was assigned my seat, and by the time I came back with the food it was already reassigned again (and as there was only one person doing the seating – by the same person). Luckily another seat just become available. “A” for effort, and “F” for execution.

The room itself is small, but comfortable relative to NYC standard. For anyone who is used to Hyatt Place standard, it would be about half of the normal size. The bathroom though is well sized and comfortable to use. The designers made every part of the room useable which was nice. Internet was free and fast. As a Diamond I was apparently upgraded to high floor with a view (which was not available for sell); however the Diamond amenity of points is still not posted to my account.

We had switched certificate in the middle of the stay, and all what was needed is to re-key the room key. I appreciated the seamless process and the honesty about the need for re-keying (as most place just tell you it is fine, but the key would not work when the certificate change occur).

All in all, it would probably not be my first choice in NYC (as location is less than ideal for my need, and the breakfast experience); however using the Hyatt Credit card certificate I will sure be back.

I have stayed at Hyatt Places before and I was shocked at first to stay in what has to be the world's smallest Hyatt Place, in terms of rooms and space that is. However, everything I needed was within a few paces inside the 235 square foot room. I had large windows and 2 sets of shades to block the morning sun. There was a small sofa bed which I did not use and the decor to me felt more like a Starwood Aloft hotel including the showers only in bathrooms.

There were only 8 rooms on my floor and with only 2 elevators, wait times especially in the morning were lengthy and sometimes you had to wait to catch the next one. The fitness center was in the basement and seemed much too small. I would prefer some hotels simply subsidize a day pass to a nearby health club with more equipment and amenities.

This is one of the few hotels that serve a hot, complimentary breakfast which is decent and there were 3 fast computers in lobby to print from. Wifi was very fast too.

At first I did not like the cookie cutter concept of newer midtown Manhattan hotels where a new building goes up and is separated into 2-4 skinny hotels, but after staying the property and rooms begin to grow on you.

The newness, nice location and pleasant outdoor terrace at front door make these environmentally certified hotels feel more like home. And I would consider it home more often if it were not for the ridiculous prices and high category award levels of New York hotels.

If you are not lucky you might get a room with a [--] view and quite noisy, unhelpfull staff. Sleeping was very difficult with the noise from the road and from the air conditioning and fridge , I have asked for a less noisy room but the staff was neither nice nor able to help.

A new hotel in a great location, near Herald Square, so great shopping in the immediate vicinity. Also near many subway stops for various lines, so very convenient to travel around. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Fitness center small and in the basement, but adequate machines with built in video systems, and there are towels and cold water available. Breakfast was fairly good, although crowded in the morning. The elevators were slow to arrive at times; allow an extra few minutes for this, and ask for a lower floor, so you can use the stairs if in a rush. Room was average size for NYC (meaning small anywhere else), but comfortable bed, nice large shower and a big flat screen television. To sum up, a good 'base of operations' for either business or tourist trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a lower floor, so the stairs are a viable option to use, if elevators are too slow for you.

If you spent time to do some homework, and is flexible in your vacation days, it is not hard to find very good rates for this midtown Hyatt Place even during busy seasons. You get everything you expect from any Hyatt Place, and more. The atmosphere is lively. The breakfast is above average. The room is spacious and clean. I will not hesitate to choose this hotel again if the rate is good.

The location of this hotel is good. The gym is adequate. The complimentary breakfast is pretty good. Two old slow elevators for 25+ floors means you will wait a long time for the elevator. The bar is tiny, but the evening bartender Kevin is awesome and makes a mean martini. The cleanliness of the rooms is average--or so I thought until I found bed bugs in my bed! When I checked out a night early because of the bed bugs, the hotel charged me full price, and said they would need to conduct an investigation that would take 6 to 8 weeks long before issuing a refund. An investigation--even though I brought them a live bed bug in a water bottle and despite the fact that there was at least one smashed one on the bed sheets. But they gave me 10,00 Hyatt points to make it all good, as if I am going to stay at Hyatt in the future. Boo to Hyatt for the bed bugs and their refund policy.

Room Tip: Avoid room 2504
