Description: GRATA is Latin for 'Welcome'. It also means a gracious hello, and a gratuitous thank you. It's the proprietor's promise that you will be well-taken care of here. Mouth-watering cuisine stems from Grata is a melding of worlds. Upon entering, a curved bar carved from mango and cordova-colored wood greets you. This rich, beautiful wood is also used on the cocktail tables. Exposed brick walls and traditional linen-clothed tables complete the dining room decor. Cream-colored walls and ceilings weave a seamless blend of old and new worlds. This comfortable restaurant with its sleekly modern, yet classy European ambiance sits at the foot of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge on 59th Street and 1st Avenue, Manhattan. The charming decor makes a lovely night out for neighborhood regulars, a date, family or friends gathering, or for business people wanting to impress their clients to close that Grata is starting its second year. Come in, say hello and enjoy a delicious meal. Allow us the courtesy of thanking the Sutton/Beekman neighborhood (as well as Manhattan and its outer boroughs) for allowing Grata the room to grow and improve. We are thrilled to be a part of the Sutton/Beekman Place community. Many exciting events and changes are in store during our second year!

“BEST RESTAURANT IN NEW YORK CITY”
Reviewed April 18, 2014

"The place can be a little pricey ($1500 for 2 with starters mains and wine). But worth every penny, and every course! The food was exquisite. We had a salmon tartare starter that combines the best of tartar with Italian food. Mains and dessert was great as well. The server (we love him Alejandro ) was attentive, full of suggestions, and just mastered exactly the right combination of anticipating what we'd need when we needed it, but being entirely inconspicuous for the rest if the time. Will definitely go back again!" “Persone Son Grata”
Reviewed December 2, 2013

The title of this review means "people are grateful" for this charming, pleasant, inviting little Italian bistro on Manhattan's Upper East Side. This was a first visit and with friends who just moved into the neighborhood and were "checking out" one local eatery after another. One friend said "I like this place" as we were being seated and before a single morsel or liquid refreshment had been tried! One appetizer and three entrees later, we all liked this place and with good reason. The Caesar and Beet Salads were quite good as was the house bread that all of us could have consumed unendingly. The Charred Baby Octopus appetizer was very good and my dinner companions were extremely pleased with their Spiced Mussels with French Fries and the Grilled Scottish Salmon with Cauliflower Puree and Braised Kale. Thanks to a few patrons on a Sunday night coupled with lots of sound absorbtion, the noise level enabled easy conversation without a problem. The service was average plus, but could have been more attentive. Overall, this was an excellent restaurant that made those new to the neighborhood very happy.

“4 for 4...in a bad way!”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

dined here for first time on a Sat nite with 2 other couples. Let's get right to the 4 "problems" wi this place:
1. service incredibly slow
2. very noisy, hard to have a conversation
3. food very mediocre; best party was the bread. Salmon better in local supermarkets; french fries ($7) better at Wendy's; my penne past wi chicken very pedestrian and chicken difficult to find
4. way over-priced for quant and quality (i.e small caesars salad = $12)
Go back? NEVER!!!!

“Like a jazz jewel box...a NYC hidden gem.”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

What an incredible experience from start to finish...dark lighting and candle light, dead clean dining room, positively delicious menu with choices of half & full sized portions of home-made pasta (the Garganelli pasta, in a veal ragu sauce with a lemon rosemary scent was an absolute killer!), we loved the grilled Artichokes with cherry tomatoes, arugula, in lemon vinaigrette & remoulade sauce, the roasted whole fish was perfectly prepared and the Striped Bass Fillet a la Plancha over cherry tomatoes, grilled eggplant, and basil was worth the subway ride alone.-and perfect Panna Cotta for dessert! (we didn't think anyone knew how to do a great panna cotta anymore!) The prices are very reasonable--especially for the quality & care of the food--and the service was spot on. We also LOVED the live jazz--soft, classic, loud enough to enjoy but not too loud to enjoy some conversation. We will be back to this little gem for sure.
