“not a pretty hotel but amazing staff!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2012

I stayed for the last week of july and i actually liked it a lot! the place is not so fancy but the staff helped me a lot during my trip since i didnt have a way to print anything or to look up directions on my not so expensive phone from mexico i kept bothering the young girl for directions on how to get places so the staff is very friendly...the wifi doesnt work that well in the rooms and thats a major no no... but i would just go downstairs to the lobby and use it there. the neighborhood is really nice i felt safe even after coming back at 3am (which you cannot do in mexico). the rooms are clean and house keeping was given daily when i stayed there. the rooms are really small but then again thats new york! overall a GREAT stay i would definitely come back in the near future to book again here.

We booked two nights in a budget room with a double bed. It was very hot and there was no AC but no complaints here, since it was advertised that budget rooms do not have AC. The ceiling fan was whobbling and hitting the ceiling making a noise that I could hear from the next door shared bathroom.

The location is pretty good. You are 3 blocks away from the 110th street subway station which is serviced by the red line that can get you downtown, but be advised that it is not an express line and it stops in every single station there is, so if you need to get to Times Square, for example, you will have 9 stops along the way.

The most frustrating thing was that the total due on arrival as per the booking information was not in fact the final total due. Oh yes, there were taxes! Would it kill anyone to put an extra line in the final due computation that states the tax amount??!! For two nights it was an additional 35 dollars worth of taxes and fees. The invoice had some 5 separate lines with different taxes adding towards the final amount due. We have stayed in a couple of other budget places but have seen such practice for the first time. We compared prices with other establishments before booking and it would have helped a lot in making a better decission, should the tax be included in the advertised price.

The bed had a mattress with springs that were hurting the back, plus the bed was so noisy that you couldn't make a slight move in it without waking up the other person. I am almost sure that the neighbours could hear it too, as I deffinitely could hear them.

The sheets looked crisp and washed but were still stained. This was desgusting. Is it that much of a cost to buy new linens from time to time? The room was extremely small (under 2 feet of space on each side of the bed), but I guess that is something you can expect in Manhattan.

Staff at the reception was neither too friendly nor rude, no major complaints there.

All in all, I am sure that for this kind of money or maybe for a little more extra, one can find a better place to stay and in a better location.

This was our final destination at a two month tour and found it a nice place to stay. The bed was really comfortable and the air conditioning worked very well. The place also had a shared kitchen area which had an oven and microwave, just no cutlery or plates etc to cook with. It is a good location for central park and it is in a nice area in general. The room however was small and we struggled for space, but there are drawers to keep your clothes in and a television if you just want some home comforts. The staff are also very friendly and helpful.

Stayed here for a few nights in July...good points: en-suite room, safe neighbourhood, tv in room, excellent air con close to underground and restaurants/supermarkets.

Points for improvement: clean sheets every night (pretty sure they are just sprayed with air fresher), friendly staff who can answer questions rather than come back tomorrow and speak to..., total cost to be paid on arrival includinging tax, updated beds and mattresses.

Like the title treat this like a middle of the range youth hostel

Room Tip: Lower floors to get the wifi

For the price it was good, but on the reservations it didn't say that there was a 16% tax and a $3.50 a person tax making it $145 a person not $133 like we thought. The celling fan was loud but not as bad as the A/C which is a window unit. The elevator fit one person plus lugauge. The fridge in the room smelled, there was a kitchen but no tools. The shared bathroom was for like 8 other rooms so sometimes we had to up a floor. The internet signal was so bad we couldn't get it on the 2nd floor room. The night guy was very helpful though.

At $140 a night, even in Manhattan, I would expect a reasonably comfortable bed and clean linens. Our bed had springs that cut into our backs, there was no mattress cover, and the towels and washcloths were stained. Euw. Hallways are narrow, dark, and a little smelly. The hotel advertised Internet service, but most of the time it could only be accessed in the lobby. People stand around in the lobby and sit all over the stairs to check their email, because the management apparently doesn't see fit to place chairs in the lobby. The front desk staff was not unfriendly, but not friendly either. They basically ignore the guests. We saw staff sleeping a couple of times. The hotel has minimal security, as the front door is always open, and the staff is not alert. What DOES this hotel have to recommend it? Good air-conditioning and a fantastic location. The Upper West Side and Morningside Heights are vibrant, safe neighborhoods with dozens of fantastic restaurants and a diverse, friendly local population. I'd recommend finding another place in the same area.

We stayed here for 8 days and couldn't have been happier. If you are looking to stay in your hotel room all day or in the hotel itself and lounge around a pool then this place is not for you. However, if you are looking for a basic room for a reasonable price to use as your base for what you plan to do in New York then the Morningside will fit your bill. When we checked in we were told because of the length of our stay they would try and upgrade us at not charge when a bigger room was available. Within two days we were offered to upgrade (we were in a 3 person room)but chose not to because we were comfortable. The rooms all have fridges and there is cooking facilities on all floors. We shared a bath but never had a problem getting a shower or using the restroom. Very good location, close to subway and many eating establishments. There are also at least two markets close by, the one on 110th street right by the subway stop was excellent. I would definintely stay here again. Staff was friendly, beds changed daily. Welcomed the air conditioner that worked great since it was in the high 90s while we were there. Would recommend to anyone looking for this type of hostel type hotel.

Room Tip: Room 206 (3 person room is nice because it faces the street and allows plenty of light. Street nois...
