Shanghai Asian Manor in the heart of New York's Chinatown is one of the really good, and not very expensive restaurants that line Mott Street from one end to the other. The Kung Pow Chicken was very good as were the snow pea dumplings, vegetable dumplings and cold sesame noodles. Service was friendly and first rate.

I went back here last night after not having been for a while. The food is excellent, as long as you make sure you order real Shanghai food. They have added a number of Cantonese and Chinese-American dishes to the menu, so it is often difficult to know what the real good stuff is. Some advice: Stay with the cold appetizers, soup dumplings (some of the best in NY), yellow fish dishes, Lion’s Head, Shanghai style noodle dishes and a few other things (although I must admit, the salt and pepper squid, a Cantonese dish, as also excellent). Wikipedia has a good list of Shanghai dishes [--]

This place, in my experience, is just one of a handful of Asian restaurants in and around Chinatown that use only very little MSG in their cooking, and thus I have started to eat here regularly.

The quality and the taste of the food here is amazing! They offer a wide selection, too, of dumplings and dim sum, and the amazing sauces for all of these are obviously made in their own kitchen, rather than decanted from a bottle of commercial sauce.

Incidentally, their menu offers a number of authentic Chinese dishes that are commonplace in some Chinese villages, but that are only rarely found in Chinese restaurants in the USA.

All of the waitstaff seem to be Chinese, and most of them seem to be very happy in their jobs, and best, most of them speak very good English, which is very helpful when ordering if you are not a speaker of the Chinese language.

In closing, all that I can say is that their food quality and selection are amazing, prices are inexpensive, and that meals here are unforgettable! Best of all for me is the fact that their foods contain very little MSG!

When we got there, looking for a clean yet original restaurant in Chinatown, we were a bit surprised by how long we had to wait for the table and how long other people waited.

We would be quite willing to wait much longer than that and are planning to come back the first thing when we come to NYC again.

The dumplings were fantastic (if overboiled, but that did not influence the taste), the beef was absolutely yummy and the Thai Ice Tea was delicious.

Oh, and the service was great - efficient and smiling.

And the proces were surprisingly low for such a good meal.

Yum.

Best (real) soup dumplings!! Everything we ordered was awesome and we ordered a ton. We ate there with friends, one of which grew up nearby, is Chinese, and ate there with her family for years. The soup dumplings were divine. The watercress and shrimp dumplings were fabulous. The scallion pancake excellent. We got pork buns, pea shoots, on and on. We even somehow squeezed in a pan fried noodle dish, something I rarely am able to find, and it was SO good. As full as we were, we had to stuff it in!
The service is excellent, and the prices are incredibly reasonable for NYC. We couldn't believe our bill for all that food we ordered.
I recommend this place to anyone that loves dim sum. And anyone with enough taste to realize that places like Wo Hop next door are TERRIBLE.
We can't wait to go back!!
