We visited Beauty & Essex in January 2013 when my husband and I visited NY for our honeymoon, along with our 2 best friends.
I researched tonnes and tonnes of restaurants prior to booking here for a special last night dinner.
I was really impressed by the reviews on trip advisor, along with the quirky, cool look of the place. We were lucky enough to be staying at The W Hotel and the guest experience manager, Patrick Armano, was fabulous and could actually give us a personal recommendation.
We were massively excited to visit, but initially I was maybe expecting more style over substance.... Not so at all. The menu and food were outstanding. The surrounding and ambience were so super cool that all together it added up to the most fabulous experience.
We spent the ENTIRE evening there and after dinner ventured down to the bar where my husband and friend enjoyed the whiskey and the girls tried out the cocktails. Highly recommended this for a truly unique NY experience.

We are two couples out to celebrate a 70th birthday. If the restaurant had not been recommended to us, we might have been confused on arrival. The restaurant's neon sign covers a still visible previous occupants Furniture Store sign. On walking in the front door of the restaurant, you walk through a pawn shop, before entering the restaurant itself. Again, confusing. But the restaurant decor itself is a delight of crystal and subdued lighting. And the food is great. The waitress explained that this was a plate-sharing restaurant. Being able to taste many more dishes than if we'd each ordered individually added to our enjoyment. And tastes were exceptional! Our server was efficient, knowledgeable about the menu, and helped us decide how many dishes to order.
Although the restaurant does not, per se, have a gluten free menu, when one of our group inquired about gluten free items, she was provided a list of items on the menu that are gluten free. Only sorry that we were only visiting or we would be frequent visitors to Beauty & Essex.

It's oh so easy to find yourself dining in bad restaurants - especially in big cities. A NY based friend gave us a shortlist of "awesome" places to try and this place featured high.
From the moment you walk through the front pawn shop and into the elegant ballroom style dining space, you know you're in for something special. We dined on a Sunday night and the place was heaving. The waitress recommended a series of share plates, all of which were generous and superb. After dinner, we moved upstairs and danced the night away with cocktails. A terrific night out. Wish I'd bought that ring from the pawn shop mind...

Been here a few times, once on an off evening for dinner, once for a birthday party. Cannot say enough good stuff about this place. Great vibe, amazing food...you just want to sit and hang there all day. All small plates, so you can try out lots of different menu items even with a very small group. The butterscotch dessert is a must have, and also the box of donuts--AMAZING!
One of my favorite restaurants in NY hands down. Good job Chris Santos!

We recently had a Sales Team dinner at the restaurant and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. While it can be a bit loud, the energy is palpable and the food excellent. The sharing of food for the table was great. Standouts were the NY Pretzel with shaved NY strip, mustard aioli & crispy shallots, grilled cheese, smoked bacon and tomato soup dumplings, eggplant pizzetta and lobster tacos. The star of the dinner show however was the Asian Spice Rubbed Pork Ribs - outstanding! If in the NYC area, it's definitely worth trying.
