“phenomenal first time in nyc”
Reviewed June 13, 2011

Excellent service, even though we were part of a large university group from Toronto arriving before check in time, the hotel was extremely organized in labeling our bags with names and room numbers so that we didn't have to do a thing.
All inclusive breakfast was the highlight.
Room was simply furnished and very functional, nothing more than that was needed from us. View from room wasn't great since we were on ground floor but we didn't need one anyways. Very clean and well kept hotel.
At night they had live music playing in the breakfast/dinner area and it was a very romantic atmosphere.
The staff were polite and always willing to give advice on tours and other sightseeing places around nyc.
Location of hotel was not too bad with a fairly easy access to subway and close to empire state building and very quiet neighborhood.
Best thing: amazing breakfast
Worst thing: location (which again wasn't so bad)

I stayed four nights in June 2011. The hotel is on 28th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. One can reach the hotel from Grand Central with a walk directly down Park Avenue. This will take you 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your pace.

The lobby is modest, but the check-in was efficient, pleasant, and offered little Hershey bars. Two adjacent elevators serve the hotel and this arrangement is adequate for all but the most busy times. There is an eating area off the lobby that serves the buffet style breakfast that comes with the room charge. Breakfast has a good selection of items, cereals, fruit, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, various danish, bagels, coffee (regular and decaf), and a selection of juices. Everything is simple and perfectly adequate. There is no limit and you can enjoy yourself. In the evening the same area becomes the Black Duck restaurant. I ate here one night, and had the duck. It was good, cooked right, and had plenty of flavor. I would rate the duck dinner as 8/10. Things are ordered one at a time, with the duck being about $25. Salad was extra, spinach, and also good but a bit routine, perhaps 6/20. Service was pleasant. It was a Tuesday night and no reservation was needed. There are two or three tables on the street, but most tables are inside. There is a bar that serves just about anything.

The rooms are on the small side. Mine had a double bed, with about two feet to spare on each side, with perhaps 4 feet between the end of the bed and the wall. The bed was very comfortable and came with 4 regular pillows. A small desk was present with a good light with two intensities. There was a mini-fridge. The room had three small drawers and a half-closet - adequate to hang shirts or jackets, but a full length dress would have to be folded. There was no rack for a suitcase, but the top of the desk could be used. The bathroom was very clean and of good size and everything in there worked fine. There is air conditioning with two settings, two fan settings, and heat settings. It was 95 and humid most of the week and the air conditioner kept the room comfortable. It has the same problem many of these do - when the air conditioner cooling turns off, so does the fan so the noise level fluctuates. When the fan alone is on it is continuous. Internet is available. My room did not face the street (most don't) and was well insulated from the outside noise. This was one of the quieter hotels that I have experienced in New York.

Room Tip: As for a room that does not face the street.

On arrival we could not get to the reception desk because a film crew were making what appeared to be a porn film , the hotel must have rented the reception to them . We were shown to a terrible squalid room and only after considerable argument we were upgraded , the room was nothing like what was advertised on Hotels.com and the receptionist blamed hotels.com but the porter said it was always happening . The upgraded room was fine and breakfast was good but be very sure about what you are going to get !

Dear Larpool,
Hello and thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay with us.
We are very sorry your visit did not reflect our high standards or meet your expectations.

In regards to the filming, the New York Film Festival did a short piece in our historic building under the watchful eye of our General Manager. Artistic endeavors in New York are part of what makes our city so amazing, but we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this caused you upon check-in.

We are glad you enjoyed your room and breakfast and hope you may return another time.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

I just stayed again at an excellent boutique hotel in New York that I can highly recommend - The Park South on East 28th between Park and Lexington . The rooms are small but very clean and well-kept. It's in the middle of the block on a largely residential street so it's very quiet. The location is just perfect, a half block from block from a subway station at 28th and Park.

he hotel is surrounded my excellent restaurant choices within a 4-5 block walk in multiple directions. There's even a Duane Reade drug store on the corner by the subway stop so you can practical things if you need them.

Without a doubt I will stay here again when I return to New York City .

This is a cozy, clean, and friendly small hotel centrally located in MId Manhattan. It is 1/2 block from the 6 line which is only a couple of stops from Grand Central. There were plenty of places to eat within a couple of blocks of the hotel, including a bakery next door, a little grocery store at the end of the block, and a McDonalds at the other end of the block. We never ate dinner at the hotel's restaurant, but the menu looked really good, though expensive. The service was wonderful whenever I needed anything. (Other than you had to ask room service for ice, as they had no ice machine available) The morning free breakfast was enough to get you going: cereal, pastries, bagels, breads, sliced meats & cheeses, yogurt, fruit, snack bars, coffee and juice. Our room was a King on the first floor. The room size was adequate with a small desk and two chairs, but the closet was tiny and short. Luckily, we had no suits or long dresses that needed special care, as there would be no room for those. We hung our jackets from the drapery rod. The toiletries were very nice and replaced each day. The room was very quiet, but the view was of the gravel courtyard and an air-conditioning unit. We had to keep our drapes closed while in the room, as the other rooms were easily visible - no privacy from the windows. We walked to many areas around the hotel and always felt safe. Booking was easy through their website, and if you watch the specials, good deals are available. We booked for a little over $200 per night, which we felt was an excellent price considering the quailty of our stay. We would would stay here again.

We enjoyed our stay here. It was close to the subway and we could walk uptown or downtown also. Check in was easy. The desk staff was helpful with questions we asked. We had an inside room looking at another buidling, and it was very quiet. The room was very clean, but extremely small. We only had carry-on suitcases. Larger ones would not have fit in the Superior Queen we were given.

The room description when we booked said that we had "unbelievably comfortable...beds....copierfax on working desk." Also said "robes". We did not have a comfortable bed nor did we have a copierfax on working desk or robes...just one and there were two of us. The bed did not seem like it was queen size. which we have in our own home. We only had a bed table on one side of our bed and no reading light or table on the other. We did ask the front desk if our room was superior queen and she replied "yes".

Breakfast each morning wasvery good to get us on our way. Nice bar to have a drink at night. We were in New York and happy and did not spend any of our day at the hotel.

We would stay here again and recommend it, but not if you wanted to spend any time in your room. I

Darkest room ever. Good thing there's a hardware store down 28th. Street with a large range of flashlights. Had to order in an extra lamp, which the friendly, obliging staff brought in right away, but this made a very small very dark room into a somewhat lighter but smaller room. Did I say the room was dark? And after maybe three PM, at least in May when we visited, the (dark) brick wall outside the room gets even darker. One of those strap-on-to- your-head battery-operated lamps would come in handy. Or a miner's helmet.

Superior staff at reception desk. The baggage handler/car wrangler ("Chuck") is efficiency and courtesy personified. Nice breakfast and nicer breakfast room which morphs into a bar/restaurant later on. Cozy lobby and entryway. Well-designed baths. Everything tidy and clean on account attentive and thorough housekeeping personnel.

Can't gripe about the room rates, because New York prices have become stratospheric at every hotel we investigated. This will have to be our last visit to NYC until rates go down.

I wasn't exaggerating about the darkness. I've been in smaller rooms; rooms so small you had to leave your carry-on out in the corridor (Southampton, UK), but this is the global low-lumens champ. So far.
