“Magic little gem!”
Reviewed February 26, 2007

We booked this hotel after reading the reviews on this site and people weren't wrong when they said it was fantastic. It isn't opulent luxury but it is amazingly cosy and welcoming for NY. If you know NY hotels you know nothing comes for free however, here you do get those little extras which makes all the difference. We booked here at the last minute and all that was left was a petite room. We were a bit apprehensive about this as reviews had said it was just big enough for 1 person but when we got there it was just right for the 2 of us. Admittedly it wasn't large but it was so comfortable and cosy and more importantly extremely clean. There were books in the room, bottled water, and all the other usuals plus if you fancy staying in there are DVDs to borrow and play on your DVD player. Another thing rare for NY is the fact that breakfast is served and more to the point it is actually quite good. It is served overlooking Madison Ave and you are sat in large leather chairs with a selection of papers and books should you want them.
The staff were very friendly and willing to help in any way they could.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for a stay in NY - its a real find!

The Library Hotel was the PERFECT hotel for my 3 week stay in New York. I was visiting New York alone for work and the Library Hotel made me feel right at home during my long stay. The staff couldn't have been nicer and all of my needs were met. The hotel goes over the top to make sure your stay is special. The rooms are tight, but very cozy. I look forward to my future stay.

the library hotel has it all
great location, value for money - breakfast, 24 hour coffee and pastries, wine and cheese at 5pm - all included in the tariff , which is moderate
rooms are comfortable and have all amenities
staff concerned and obliging
roof top bar a treat
theme of hotel is clever and well executed - giving that special point of difference - book lovers take note

one of my favorite nyc hotels. have been back to stay twice now, so thought it was time to write a review. this hotel is located in midtown and is a renovated branch of the new york public library (near the main branch) also near bryant park. walkable from grand central station, but will need to travel a bit for nightlife. the coolest thing about the library hotel is the design of the rooms (based on the dewey decimal system!!) so if your room number corresponds to 'ad rchitecture' or 'music', there will be decorations and random books related to those topics in your room. they have a good continental breakfast every am, and wine and cheese hour at night (<--recommend) also, rooftop bar is a nice place to stop back when you're returning for the night. rooms on the smaller side, but nicely done and not too cramped.

This is a small hotel that far exceeds the service and amenities of a larger hotel. It is well located and is comfortable, quiet, and welcoming. The presence of the books as well as the video tapes bring a unique atmosphere to the experience. The rates are highly competitive. It is simply a great place to stay.

Great location for midtown. Great service. Great atmosphere and decor. Good value for price. I have stayed in some other NY hotels recently (arranged by others) and have been pretty consistently disappointed. I plan to only stay at the Library Hotel in the future. Even the small rooms are great.

We love splurging on the best hotels, but after staying at the Library Hotel I honestly wonder why anyone would shell out $600-1,000 to stay at the Four Seasons, Plaza, Waldorf-Astoria, Mandarin Oriental, etc. etc. when a place like the Library Hotel exists in New York City.

We arrived on Saturday around noon (well before check-in) and were promptly given a room. There was no one else in the lobby, and the entire weekend I don't recall ever seeing anyone on our floor or feeling at all cramped or crowded. The staff was uniformly pleasant and helpful.

Let me address the reviews that remark that the rooms are small. In a word, it's true. Ours had a queen bed, small table and chair, desk and tv unit, and not much else. But, come on people, are you really coming to New York City for a giant hotel room?? Be assured that the Library Hotel has very clean, comfortable beds, very ample, attractive bathrooms, elegant decorations, and top-notch heating/showers/etc. Don't worry at all about the size.

The common facilities at the hotel are likewise somewhat limited, but do you really want to spend 20-30% of your daily rate on spas, fitness centers, chandeliers, marble walls, and other extravagances you don't need? At the Library Hotel you are playing a much smaller amount for a wonderful second-floor lounge with shelves of books, newspapers, a baby grand piano, and all-day coffee, juice, and snacks; nearby are a couple computers for internet/email junkies. On the 14th floor is a wonderful glass atrium leading to an outdoor terrace, and on the other side a romantic, attractive room with a fireplace, couches, and another glass terrace.

The hotel is just a block from the Public Library, a few blocks from Times Square and the Empire State Building, and within walking distance of most sites. We paid $275 (before taxes) per night; granted, that's in February where the rates may be lower, but it seemed extremely reasonable for an absolutely first-rate experience.
