My wife and I stayed with our 2 children for a business & pleasure trip. We have traveled to many places throughout the world as a family unit and consider ourselves well-versed in the art of hotel critiquing. Additionally, as I am originally from NY, I have a good sense of the local NY hospitality market.

The Ritz Carlton Battery Park is new enough but lacks character and general warmth. Some of this is attributed to the far away location and rather plain service, but much can also be attributed to the small, low, and sterile rooms (despite the over-hyped view of the harbor and Lady Liberty).

We found the prices to be quite high for the room, basic services, and food & beverage (which was decent, but not worth 100 USD+ for lunch). We also got the feeling that kids were not welcome (or at least viewed only as a source of more revenue).

Additionally, watching the bellmen whistle at cabs half a mile a way was quite entertaining. The hotel cannot line up cabs. One night, it took 40 minutes just to get out of the lobby and on to dinner.

Overall, the hotel is about as good as the average Marriott, but then again we weren't paying to receive Marriott-level accommodations and service.

We just returned from a weekend at the Ritz. We were able to check in early and given a complimentary upgrade to a harbor view room which were nice touches. We were also sent chocolates in honor of our anniversary. Since most of our time was spent in Soho and Tribeca, the cab rides were necessary, but reasonable ($8 or so per trip). However, Midtown is easily $20 no matter what time of day you head there between traffic and the distance. The concierge desk was helpful and friendly. Rise bar had a nice terrace facing the Statute of Liberty, good drinks and decent appetizers. It was expensive, though, over $100 for a few drinks and an appetizer platter for two. If you plan to do Midtown or theaters, you are adding at least $50 per day in cabs to your tab. If you are looking to see the tourist attractions in the harbor area or go to Ellis Island, this is an excellent base.

had a great time at the Ritz.. staff was perfect. Each time we walked back in from shopping or sightseeing- we were greeted with "Welcome Home"- All aspects from the view of "Liberty" to the room service was incredible. Will visit again and suggest anyone to do the same. Limo tour of the city arranged by the staff was great- NY traffic will make you use the bar. :)

We stayed here mid February during a four day break to the big apple. The hotel is situated in lower manhattan, near ground zero & overlooks the statue of liberty adjeacent to Hudson bay. The hotel is immaculate, very accomodating and the door staff and porters do everything for you. Our room was very spacious and well equipped with satellite TV, Nintendo mini disc etc. Be aware though, its not cheap to use the facilities or phone home from here. We made a big mistake and they charge almost $30 for connecting a call to the UK, this left us with a bill on check-out of nearly $750. If you plan to eat breakfast in your room I'd advise you only do it the once as it costs in the region of $85 for two. If you can book this hotel and flights via Expedia as we did you can catch a bargin in the region of £850 per couple including return flights with Virgin Atlantic, which considering this is a 5 star hotel it's excellent value for money.
