I never write reviews but feel compelled to after our horrible stay at the W. The first room they put us in smelled terrible, so they moved us to another room, which smelled fine. Later that night, a strong smell of cigarette smoke started wafting in through the air vents, despite our being on a non-smoking floor. The staff's first suggestion (at 10:30 pm) was for us to leave the room for half an hour while they "purified" the air. Ultimately, they moved us to another room, but it took about an hour for them to pull that together. Once we were settled in the new room at around 11:30 pm, the front desk called to say we had a package at the front desk that was going to be delivered to our room. Turns out it was not a package for us. Ten minutes later, we got another call saying that someone was coming to pick up the misdelivered package. When we got our bill, you can imagine how pleased we were to see that they not only didn't compensate us for any inconvenience, but they actually overcharged us for the room by $30 and charged us for movies we never ordered. Great location, but will never stay there again.

We had a nice stay at the W. The hotel is not laid out like a normal W. It has more light and not the groovy ambiance of what I expect from W hotels. The location is great. Sort of in the center of Manhattan. Lots of restaurants and shops and a short walk to Greenwich Village. On Saturdays there is a green market at Union Square which is pretty amazing. The bar downstairs always seems to have a lot people. We had a mega room which is bigger than their standard room, so room size was not an issue. The first room we had was showing some wear an tear. We had to move because apparently some one had gotten sick on the carpet and the smell was lingering. The front desk was very nice and moved us immediately. Our second room was in very good condition. There was nothing spectacular about the decor. Very standard earth earth tones. The bed was very comfortable. We had no problems with the service and would definitely stay there again.

The hotel occupies a historical building of some insurance company, which means they are stuck with the layouts of the original offices. Room sizes are on the smaller side, but they are ok. The biggest problem is that the las refurbishment the hotel has done was about 8 years ago, which means the interior is really tired.

The service is excellent, but it does not make up for the crappy rooms.

Basically, we booked the hotel for a week and left the next day. Again, thanks to the fantastic service, they did not rip us off for the penalties, which I am thankful to them, since the rooms where so bad, we would have moved out regardless, whether they would play the ball or not.

We paid $469/night. The staff were polite. The rooms and lobby were relatively clean and small. There was nothing special about the decor in the rooms. No complimentary internet, coffee/tea in the room. However there was a complimentary juice dispenser with a stack of tiny little plastic cups (the kind you use to gargle with at the dentist) in the lobby. My friends whose rooms faced Union Square complained that it was too nosy and they couldn't sleep. Not worth it. It's all hype.

We loved our stay at the W Union Square. We stayed two nights July 1 and 2. The staff was great. The bed was very comfortable and we had a nice view of Union Square. Construction noise on Union square started early, but we were up anyway.

First, let me say that I LOVE W Hotels! Everything about them (for the most part) is FABULOUS...the design, the decor, the lobbies are all chic, chic, chic. However, I was so dissapointed when I checked into my room at this property. My room was the tiniest thing known to man... I think it was designed for Papa Smurf.

Now, I've traveled to NYC before, and I know all about the notoriously small hotel rooms there, but this prior knowledge did not prepare me for my stay at the W. Imagine a Queen size bed...now draw a line around it about 1 foot out from the bed (on all sides) and that's about how big the entire room was.

Getting beyond the fact of its size, the room was very dimly lit and and just didn't seem to be welcoming or inviting at all. I REALLY wanted to like it though, but I just couldn't. Sorry W. I'm glad I only slept there for 2 nights.

The saving grace here was the awesome Front Desk staff, the happening lobby bar scene each night and the amazing restaurant.
