We found this little gem on a Bed and Breakfast website even thought they don't serve a full continental breakfast, just rolls and cereal. The hotel is small and cozy. There is a courtyard separating two properties where you can sit and relax after a full day of sightseeing. We stayed in the back property, off the street and less stairs. The room is cozy, plenty of closet space and quiet and clean.

I can't say enough about the location. There are 2 subway stations close by, close to supermarkets, wine stores, drug stores, Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Broadway and the best of all - restaurants. Dozens and Dozens of them. 46th Street between 8th and 9th is Restaurant Row - Chilean, Italian, Spanish, Russian restaurants. Just walk up one side of 9th Avenue and down the other and read the menus.

The staff were friendly and always accomodating. Perfect!

Room Tip: Try to book a room in the back property. Less stairs, more quiet.

Only ten minutes from times square, the 414 is in a great location. Rare to have breakfast included in an NYC hotel so we loved it! Walls could do with a tiny lick of paint and the air conditioning was quite noisy but in general the hotel is in great condition and the staff were all lovely. Would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: We requested a quiet room at the back and it was really quiet.

Stayed here last 2 nights. Booked queen room ... Was so small, could hardly get around the "double" bed. Room was downstairs which saved carting luggage up huge staircase, but windows faced directly onto back courtyard, so had to keep blinds down for privacy. Aircon was too noisy to have on and only about 4 feet away blowing directly into me head, so hardly got any sleep the first night as it was so stuffy. Managed to open window a little on 2nd night to allow bit of air in. Breakfast was included, very adequate, but not enough room to sit anywhere and eat - had to eat breaky in bedroom:(
Position fantastic, but think bit too overpriced for what we got

Stayed here for three nights in August 2012. The location could not be better within an easy walk to Times Square and plenty of bars and restaurants near by. The hotel itself is quite small and one would describe it as 'boutique'. The rooms are quite well decorated but just starting to show signs of ware. We had a room on the 'street' side and did not find it noisy at all. Staff are excellent and helped us on numerous occasions with directions, taxi's etc. Breakfast is seld served in the entrance hall. I know it sounds strange but it works quite well and you always meet and get chatting to fellow guests. Free Wi-Fi which in my book these days is a MUST. My only criticism is that there is no lifts so if you are on the top floor as we were its three flights of stairs to get to your room. This did not bother us but if you are elderly it might be worth asking for a floor on the lower floors.

I stayed at the 414 Hotel over the Labor Day weekend. This is a lovely boutique hotel on a tree-lined street just a couple of blocks away from the hustle and bustle of Broadway and Times Square. It really is a hidden gem, but may not stay that way if these reviews are any indication.

I had a Queen Room, which was spacious and clean. Amenities included a large flat-screen TV, a clock radio with an iPod dock (setting the alarm was a bit tricky though, so providing a nightstand card with directions might be a good idea), a mini fridge, and an in-room safe. Also worth noting is the generous sized 6-drawer bureau, which is handy for guests staying longer than a couple of nights. The air conditioning kept the room very cool on a weekend of 90+ degree temperatures. My room (304) faced the street, which had its share of noise from traffic (cars and horse-drawn carriages) and late night revelers. I was okay with it but if you are a light sleeper you’re better off getting a courtyard facing room. The small nitpicks on the room I have are the walls are full of scuff marks and could use a fresh coat of paint; and the tile surround in the tub/shower needs some regrouting – but these should not be considered dealbreakers by any stretch.

The hotel has free wi-fi as well as a computer station in the lobby if you want to leave the laptop at home. There are no elevators, just stairs for the upper floors, so be sure to get a room on the 1st floor if accessibility is an issue.

Outside the front entrance are a couple of benches where you can have a front seat to indulge in people watching. In the back, separating the 2 brownstones that make up Hotel 414, is a courtyard with several tables ideal for chilling out with a book or having breakfast. Speaking of breakfast, it is served every morning from 7-10 a.m. free of charge. It is the typical continental breakfast with bread, pastries, cereal, yogurt, fruit, juices, and coffee/tea. If you’re looking for something more substantial, the Galaxy Diner is down the street at 46th & 9th.

The location really cannot be beat. The famous “Restaurant Row” is just one block away (but there are tons of restaurants in the surrounding blocks), with Times Square just a couple of blocks further. The Intrepid Museum and Circle Line Cruises are a 10 minute walk at best.

If you’re looking for a clean, comfortable room in the heart of downtown that won’t break the bank then go to Hotel 414. I can’t recommend it enough.
