“Mostly good dreams”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

We found the Dream Downtown to be a trendy hotel with lots of attention to the interior design. The staff, young guys in black/grey casual street style uniforms, took good care of us at arrival and departure. A special thanks to bell captain Vaughn for helping us with bags, taxi etc. Our room was rather small but still OK with a large bed and a well-equipped stylish bathroom. A state of the art tv/sound/phone/computer system was also in place to cater any communicative needs. The only negative point was the trend status of the hotel. During our 5-night stay there were constant happenings going on. That meant access to the roof bar was more or less impossible due to the young party crowd overflowing the place. The pool area on the second floor had same type of target audience meaning a crowd of trendy locals. Regular hotel guests were not refused entry but were not welcomed either. In all, our stay was very pleasant and we would have no problem choosing this hotel again at any future visits.

Dear Andres E,

Thank you for your review and giving some of our staff a viral “shout out”. This is most appreciated.

In regards to your concerns about the pool – please let me assure you that our Pool Area is in fact almost EXCLUSIVELY reserved for hotel guests. We are very strict with this policy and grant only few exceptions. During your stay 5-night stay we had a very busy 4th of July at the Pool and Beach (almost all hotel guests) as well as our “Hookie Party” on Monday, for locals and guests alike. All other days were actually a bit calmer than usual due to the traditionally slower holiday week in NYC and you should have had no issues securing a pool side lounge.

Our lifeguards are there to welcome and look after our hotel guests. I apologize and I am disappointed that you felt you were excluded from the pool when it is actually the opposite, meaning we value and promote our pool as being a truly luxurious amenity in NYC. As for PHD – our roof top bar is of course open to all and it being so popular is usually a draw rather than a turn off.

We hope to welcome you back some day and I invite you to reach out to me to discuss your visit further.

With best regards

AXEL

Stayed at Dream Downtown for 3 nights in July, and found the place to have most things in the 'cool book' checked off. They had the dim lightening, the beautiful people working there, the artwork, the DJ spinning etc. But it felt like it was trying a bit too hard, so it didn't really feel as cool as it should. And that's why it felt more cold than cool.

It might be unfair to rate the hotel average, because it deserves top rating for location and bed comfort. But unfunctional bathroom and noise that travels through the walls lower the score a lot. As well as a general feeling from the staff that they didn't particularly care for the guests. This was pretty obvious when we were checking in and were told the room should be ready in two minutes. Make that twenty...

Penthouse bar was nice. Great view and the party crowd looked happy. Pool area way too crowded to be useful. gym has the necessary facilities.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for a party going 25-year old, but not as much for a couple not to interested in that part of NYC.

Dear J-Morten,

We appreciate your review, especially since you gave us credit where you felt we deserved it.

Keeping the place “cool” AND warm is our mission and I apologize that you instead felt a bit of a chill. I am very sorry about the delayed check-in. At 3pm, when you arrived, the room should have been immediately available and an apology would have been called for by my colleagues.

We are glad to see that you got to enjoy our outlets and felt the positive vibe in the hotel. Granted, on certain days the pool can get a bit busy (‘tis the season) – a mixed bag for us as we welcome the energy but understand that not everyone will jump in and join the party.

But as I said in other responses – it is not always that busy and there are ample times when the mood is mellow and cool vibes keep you feel chill (in a good way).

Thank you again for your time and patronage. With best regards - AXEL

We recently had a girls long weekend in NYC...our dreams were truly realized at the Dream Downtown in Meatpackers. Wonderful rooms with great flipflops and bath robes in the lovely bathrooms complete with really tantalising give-aways. The beds are huge and so comfortable. The views from the terrace at the PHD bar must be the best in the city. The area is so villagey- buzzy bars and restaurant mix with great diners and cafes. Would go again in an instant.

I really wonder if these reviews are from real customers. I travel to NY every week so I have tried alot of hotels. Will not be returning to the Dream Downtown. The first room I was given had a very distinct and overwhelming odor from something that had been smoked. The next room smelled like Fabreze. The hotel staff confirmed that they had issues with guests 'smoking' in the facility. There is no ventilation in the bathrooms and the doors are so heavy they cannot be propped open. The decor was akin to a badly overdone college dorm room. I love contemporary but this is just not done well. I could hardly believe the hotel was only 6 months old. The carpets that were atop the concrete floors in the guest rooms - yes concrete floors- were already stained and filthy. And the staff - not well trained in hospitality. They seem to think trendy means 'attitude' and they have lots of it.

Room Tip: LIkely the suites are beautiful and I would choose a high floor - though I could hear the nightclub...

Dear freeqtrvllr (aka Frequent Traveller),

Thank you for your feedback. We are of course disappointed that you do not share the rave we receive about our cutting edge design, but understand that polished concrete and Tabriz rugs (both an expensive installation) are not for everyone. But it should not disqualify reviews of our many other guests that embrace our Andy Warhol Factory inspired designs and the kind of visionary architecture that gets us featured in the Interior Design Magazine, amongst others.

Please acept my apologies for the whiff of unwelcome odor in your room. Our standard is to provide a neutral environment. We only have 10 designated smoking rooms – but as anywhere else the non-smoking signs in all the other rooms may be occasionally ignored (and we penalize it if need be). We will work harder to eliminate any odors that don’t belong!

I was most disappointed about your comments regarding staff having an “attitude”. Customer service and friendliness of our staff are paramount to us (an approach that arguably is not shared by all "trendy" lifestyle properties). I would greatly appreciate if you reached out to me to so I can get some details about where you felt we weren’t anything but hospitable.

While the polished concrete won’t go anywhere we would appreciate the opportunity to welcome you back and have another shot at successfully merging “trendy” with a warm welcome and a pleasant environment for you.

With best regards - AXEL

Upon entering the Dream Hotel, Downtown there was an immediate feeling of relaxation and comfort. The rooms were beautiful, and its apparent that the hotel is called "the dream" because sleeping in the beds was like sleeping on a cloud. The location of the hotel was so convenient, the food was great, and the overall experience was great!

Room Tip: Don't call too late for room service, they get busy and you will be put on hold for a long time.

I stayed at the Dream Hotel Downtown on business and was very pleased. It is a great hotel with a great vibe. I had a few clients staying there as well and everyone was happy. We even got there super early and the hotel was completely booked from the night before, but they did everything that they could to accommodate us. I will definitely visit again. Oh... beds are awesome!!

Room Tip: All are great!
