Some day, when all the bookstores have been replaced with shopping mall chains people will line up to get into the Strand just to get a feel for life before the Internet. It smells like a library. There are cool books and stupid books and beautiful books and rare books and if you love books you'd be missing something wonderful if you don't stop in for a few minutes. Go !

.....you have to visit Strand. Miles and miles of books. No frill, no coffee shop, no sofas, no gift shop, just books, books and books. This is not a Barnes and Noble; this is a "book store", the kind of book store from the olden days before it became a big box merchandiser. This is the kind of book store where you go browse through the shelves not for the latest best sellers but for an obscure copy of something that's long been out of print. This is a book store for bookies.

Visited this store October. So many books all at reasonable prices. You can even grab a cheap used book to read and leave while on holidays. Unfortunately, there are no seats for the travel weary to sit down and resort. Also no coffee shop, but that is not really a problem.

Located in the village, and in the heart of the NYU campus, this bookstore brings back memories of the family run bookstores that no longer exists thanks to the big chains. They have a tremendous selection of all kinds of books, post cards, calendars, as well as unique gifts that I bet you can't find anywhere else!

When I looked up used bookstores in NYC, the Strand came up again and again as 'the best used bookstore - possibly in the world'. I felt like it was a must to check out. However, my dreams of walking out with a bag full of bargains was not to be. While the store overall was impressive, the selection was a bit limited and the PRICES were HIGH! I enjoy sci fi and fantasy, and there were pretty slim pickings - quite a big section, but lots of duplicates. Also, I don't know if this is normal for used book stores in New York, but it was pretty much exclusively hard covers - where were the pre loved paperbacks? Too hard to deal with perhaps, or not worth the money? I was disappointed anyway, as they usually offer the best prices. Having just visited a used book store in Houston where the selection was amazing and the prices around $3-4, I was a bit shocked when I picked up a used copy of a Steven Ericson for $8 at the Strand. On my way back to my hotel, I stopped in at the Barnes and Noble at Union Square, and saw the same book (but new) for the same price. I was peeved. Just as an aside, that B&N was 4 stories and had a huge range. I know it seems unfair to compare an independent used bookstore with a massive chain bookstore, but if you're paying the same prices.... Get more for your money at B&N. I read a review the described the Strand as a used bookstore that had a firsthand bookstore atmosphere, and that was what it was indeed - including the high priced hardbacks. There were carts with paperbacks selling for $1 out the front of the store but they weren't categorized, and I didn't see anything at all to tickle my fancy, even for $1. And unless you live in New York, who has the time to waste looking?
