Owner description: From its inception, Macy's Herald Square was a store unlike any other. Over the past 150 years, it has become a true New York City icon. Built in 1902, Macy's Herald Square was the first building to have the modern-day escalator, and it has continued to be a trendsetter. Today, "America's Largest Department Store" covers an entire city block with 11 levels of the latest fashions for you and your home. Macy's offers a full-service Visitor Center on the Mezzanine Level, plus restaurants throughout the store and exciting events almost every day.

“Prepare for unhelpful unfriendly staff with bad attitude”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

The staff make it difficult to spend your money as they can be curt, unfriendly and just plain unhelpful. The attitude of many we encountered, particularly in the large shoe department was a fabulous example of how bad service can be in New York City. The staff chatted amongst themselves and displayed a very irritated attitude when approached. If you want assistance, you need to be assertive and proactive. We were ignored by several staff in different locations, who clearly chose not to assist us or tell us the process required for assistance. Unacceptable. We took our business elsewhere.

macys is no joke. and youd better know where you're going when you get there because it's a complete Zoo. Expecially around the holidays, you are herded through the entire first floor.
you'll notice all the positive reviews are from tourists. thats because for out of towners it's a spectacle and something they've probably never seen before.
i live in brooklyn and work down the street from macys. the sales "Help" are disgusting. not just once or twice, every single time i go into macys for something, they are complete wastes of space. on a positive note, they do have great sales and lots to choose from. the best selection in the city. just be prepared when you go in there. although i will admit they've made some cosmetic improvements since the reno.

“This is it ! Miracle on 34th Street !!”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

although Macy's was going through a renovation , it was still worth going to . there is a seating area outside the main area ( where the thanksgiving parade stops and performers ,perform) the store has many floors and an old wooden escalator . each floor is clearly marked with what it offered. remember , the store is always very crowded

“As a newyorker!”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Being at Macy's was fantastic, you can find everything you need (or not) and you can visit 8 floors of full shopping mania! Once entered you can retire your tax free card as a foreign so you can have a little discount on everyjthing. I was there in October and I just can guess how is on Christmas time:)
