Sofitel (as with many things French) bowls you over with subtlety, elegance and consistency rather than anything over the top.

I've stayed at Four Seasons, and the Plaza, the Mandarin and the Ritz. Each has something unique to their line and their interpretation of Manhattan.

While the Sofitel may not compare in terms of pure luxury horsepower, it delivers with impeccable service, excellent food and beverage (read particularly croissants, coffee, chocolate and champagne, lol) and OUTSTANDING appointments (with the beds and linen of particular note).

Despite its actual size, the hotel feels more boutique, and is an intimate and romantic space. The fireplace in the lobby, plush furniture, soft music, pleasant aromas, sharp staff and crisp, elegant hallways punctuate that nicely appointed rooms (very decently sized by NYC standards).

Every aspect of service is prompt, courteous and professional with deeply rooted standards evident at every turn.

Our particular stay was over an anniversary and a simple mention triggered champagne, chocolate and a lovely card from management.

A quick walk to the theatre, shopping and transport made the locale a no brainer. Don't be scared by its proximity to Times Square; Sofitel's ingress remains mainly relaxed and a refuge from the city around.

Value for the luxury dollar, this place is hard to beat and offers a different, distinctively European take, on a refined hotel experience.

We stayed for four nights in a junior suite at Sofitel NYC and my wife, two kids, and I had a near perfect experience. The location is nothing short of magical, a quiet block between two French restaurants and the Yacht club, but two blocks from Broadway and an easy walk to subways, Empire State, and Grand Central. Views from our 26th floor room were fantastic, and the sofa bed had a tempur-pedic mattress, so the kids had no complaints for once. Did not hear a sound from our room. Service was impeccable, and the decor is stylish without the glossy pretentiousness of equally priced hotels. Because of the proximity to two high-end french restaurants, not to mention the great bar at the Algonquin, all less than forty feet from the front door, I had not expected to eat at Gaby's. But the room service dinner and two breakfast at Gaby's were top notch. Value, in my opinion, is outstanding.

We stayed for 4 nights in the beginning of July. We knew exactly what to expect from reading the reviews ahead of time, so we avoided the headaches such as being charged for moving anything in the minibar. We didn't even open it!

Plus +++: location, and the view from the room!

Biggest negative: We would have liked American manners rather than French. A warm smile and less apathy/snootiness would have been nice, if even ONCE. As I said, we knew what to expect, and I've been to France, so this behavior was no surprise to me.

More on the plus side: we loved the view, we really liked the room in general, especially the bathroom, we liked the beds (but where was the top sheet?), and we loved the breakfasts at Gaby's. There was a charge on the bill at the end for a bar appetizer and drink that was incorrect, and this was corrected immediately without incident at the time of check-out. We enjoyed the doorman's humor - more of that for overall staff experience would have been great. Something weird: the closet door lighting system was rigged up with several stacked-up rubber thingy's - not so "classy". The TV: very few channels and remote that barely worked, would stick. Internet: wired - what?!

The biggest take-away was that we had a fantastic view from the 21st floor. We MAY stay there again...we'd have to give it some consideration. For next time, we might look into a hotel with all of the above positives but with friendlier staff. We loved New York and this was a great location. I'd like to give it 3.5, so will have to round it up to a 4.

This hotel is listed as a luxury hotel on Expedia and I don't think it qualifies for that. It is walking distance to Times Square and Cental Park but that's really it. Entrance is pretty impressive but sort of weird, since the front desk is actually in the rear after you walk through the valet desk hall, sitting room, foyer and elevators. We arrived late (1AM) so there were no other guests but the hostess was not particularly friendly. After a quick check in we headed up to our room (60.... something, cannot remember anymore) first room from the elevator on the right. View is of the neighboring rooftops - which is fine with us, since we did not spend any time in the room. Room was pretty big in New York hotel standards but with lots of waisted space. I have chosen the queen bed option to save money but the room could easy home a king bed with space to spare. Bed was not comfortable for us but that's just personal preference. Room had good size bathroom with shower and tub as well. Count on paying $50/day for valet parking.

Room Tip: Our room was just fine on 6th floor

This stay was my fifth stay at the Sofitel New York and I continue to be impressed with the staff their attitude and their willingness to be helpful, a lot of the staff I recognise from previous visits and they are all so polite and eager to please, Also, I could not be more pleased with the hotel, it's facilities and location, it's cleanliness and the beds are so comfortable.

Some reviewers have said that it is a bit pricey but considering the quality of the hotel and it's location it is well worth the money. I have stayed in a number of other new York hotels and none of them have come a close second that is why I love returning to the sofitel, you actually think that you should be paying more for your room.

Looking forward to going back to New York and staying at the Sofitel in the near future.
