Every once in awhile everything comes together perfectly to create a magical dinner. That was our experience at Flex Mussels.
The decor is cool but comfortable. Very modern but in a warm and inviting way. It was a beautiful evening so we elected to sit on the small patio out front. The neighborhood is just what a visitor like me envisions a cool New York neighborhood to be. Great people watching with plenty of interesting characters passing by, a few even stopping to chat.
The raw bar is updated daily with the freshest seafood and the selection. We started with a half dozen oysters that our waiter recommended and they were amazing. They had a great beer list with lots of craft brews. We both had an apricot wheat beer that really paired well with the seafood. Obviously the main focus here is mussels and they offer 23 different preparations. The serving size is a pound and a quarter which we found to be just right. My girlfriend had the thai style with lemongrass, coconut milk and thai basil. The flavor was so bright and so fresh but didn't overpower the fresh, delicious mussels. I opted for the number 23, it's the daily special. For our visit it was double smoked bacon with garlic, shallots, and green beans, in a white wine and cream sauce. Wow!!! Not only did I eat every mussel, I used the crusty bread to sop up that amazing sauce.
Save room for dessert as they offer these house made donuts. Fried balls of donut dough filled with your choice of delicious goodness. We went with salted caramel, meyer lemon and raspberry. Holy cow!
Everything about this place was well done. Décor, gorgeous. Service, attentive, friendly and professional. Food, as Guy would say "off the hook". Combine that with perfect weather and perfect company and this was really a night to remember. Highlight of our NYC. weekend!
