This place is a mussels factory that uses a very straightforward aand effective approach. There are five price tiers, with three or four varieties of mussels in each. I had the $22.50 "Italiano," (calamari, toasted garlic, red wine, tomato sauce). The portion was generous and the preparation excellent. There are other offerings, including a few that are non-seafood, but mussels are clearly the main event. The fries are great, by the way.

The somewhat sterile atmosphere cost Flex one star in my book. Note that there are several locations: This review applies to the W13th Street location.

Two Seniors, two almost fifties and two pre-teens. All hungry. "We can take you at 6:00 but you
MUST vacate table by 7:30... " That's honest and the service was the same. The first Shirley
Temple to go over was quickly replaced. The glass of Rose (muy expensivo) later tipped by waiter was also quickly replaced! Hot dog. The chicken and asparagus and dollop of mashed potatoes EXCELLENT if a little underdone - vegetable, not chicken.

Three had the "special muscles..." well: sausage etc! that was good and only a couple unopened. Beats up the block at Cafe Loup. Pricey - a bit. Frits are extra. Come with other places. Ya know? (On West 17th, the Belgian chain PETIT ABEILLE for a third less. Just sayin.)

Though we all live within a Citibike ride: we felt a bit like we'd just blown in from Arkansas...
Couple of blocks away is The Waverly Inn where Mac & Cheese is $50.00. Overflow crowd
heads here? Now we know why a parking space in a nearby blgd. went for almost 8M. Okay?
Were we in The Beatrice Inn by mistake? Oh, to be thirty something and comfortably rich!

Note that others had a great time. Good, we noticed your Pradas and Guccis and designer
jeans. We left an over-large tip and slunk away by 7:30 - looking for famous faces as we scooted past the CHIC bar crowd waiting for out 6 top! JRS/NYC

all-around great place for well over 20 different styles of mussels dishes . absolute freshest tasting mussels I have ever eaten. FM gets them directly from PEI. shucked oyster choices emanate from east coast all the way to Brit Columbia. and do try their gelato, while choosing a dish of three distinct flavors...tangy,refreshing. service was perfect: friendly, knowledgeable
and attentive without "hovering". bar atmosphere is minimal, but then we didn't go to this seafoodhouse to get sloshed! also refreshing is the cost: about $120 for three courses,b4 tip.
Overall, a real find in a city full of lackluster overpriced establishments.

If you like mussels, this is the place to eat in the City. Most of us mussel lovers know about mussels Italian style in either a white or red marinara sauce. Or French style as in "moule frite". At Flex Mussels you have about twenty different selections of mussel preparation, all of them interesting and delicious. All the mussels served are fresh and plump. No shriveled, tiny mussels at Flex Mussels.

The appetizers are great as well. Last night our group of four started with an order of fried oysters, clam strips and kale salad. All were great. I have had fried oysters up and down the east coast. These fried oysters were among the best I have ever enjoyed eating.

For dinner I had the Maine style mussels served with nice big pieces of Maine lobster in the pot among the twenty mussels in a chowder and bacon sauce. My meal was fantastic. My brothers both had Parma style mussels in a Parmesan cheese and mushroom sauce. Both gave the thumbs up on their mussels. My wife had the Thai mussels which she enjoyed very much. To be sure we each shared our mussels with the others so we got to taste the other dishes.

To complete our meal we enjoyed Flex Mussel's famous donuts.

I highly recommend Flex Mussels. It is one of our favorites. We keep returning.

We would not change one thing about this place. Utterly impeccable service, trendy ambiance, outstanding seafood. We had fried oysters as light and delicate as clouds; mussels that were large, sweet, tender; crab cakes that were barely held together with only the tibeading mount of breading. Donuts for dessert that were really like none ever tasted - so good. Pre-theater and couldn't linger, and service was respectful and fast. Try this if you love seafood.
