We were greeted very warmly by our guide and given a first rate tour of Harlem by longtime resident Cheryl. She gave us a great historical perspective and information about Harlem. She took us to a couple of jazz clubs that were off the beaten path and both were terrific and loads of fun. Overall a great experience.

I took my family to the Harlem Gospel Holiday Celebration up at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. It was a lot of fun. It wasn't quite as Chirstmasy as I expected but boy those men and women can sing.

Although the rain on the day meant the walking tour was cancelled, we very much enjoyed the afternoon jazz performance in the church and the friendliness of the organisers. We were very much welcomed when we arrived and the hosts were very helpful (even lending us an umbrella to get to the church. There was no issues in being refunded for the cancelled tour.

The Bruce Williams quartet surrounded us in beautiful sound on a Friday night to an intimate audience. The local supporters of this event are welcoming and enthusiastic proponents of jazz and the Harlem community. The setting is a bit unusual for jazz, but the warm acoustics and friendly welcome bring it all together. We wandered the few blocks after an early dinner at the bar at the Red Rooster; a fabulous evening in Harlem!

The curator of this series, Craig Harris, is a venerable presence on the NYC jazz scene, and he uses his network to bring in world class musicians every week. I have been 4-5 times in the last few months, and each time I sit in awe, and comfort, to be thrilled by bravura performances. I will keep coming.
