What a great find. Our concierge recommended the place and we were not disappointed. The menu is not extensive, but what's there is great. We went a bit after noon and were seated right away. Husbunny had a basket of pastry and French Toast (he loves his carbs) I had Steak and Eggs (I'm doing Atkins.) I got a coffee with my meal and the coffee service was magical. Steaming hot and strong, the coffee came out of a small metal pot, which was left on the table for me to refill as needed. Steamed milk was served with the coffee, so it stayed nice and hot. Nice touch!
My steak and eggs were probably the best I ever had. The hangar steak was rare, and perfect. With a delicious bernaise sauce. I ordered Poached Eggs, with a side of spinach. I expected that when I broke into the eggs that they'd ooze all over the plate, but something miraculous happened. The yolks had a creamy consistancy. I asked our server about it and she said that the chef used an emulsifier. I have no idea what it is and a google search revealed nothing. So...write back if it's an appliance I can buy, because that was GREAT! My meal came with a frisee salad with a tasty vinagrette. Just perfect.
The National is clearly from another time. The black and white mosaic tile floor, the old wooden bar, everything about it is elegant.
Really enjoyed my meal. The steak and eggs were $24, the French Toast was $15, so for New York, not really a bad price, especially not for how good it was.
