They overbooked the hotel, offered to put me up in what can only be described as a prison cell in disguise and whilst I was at the reception the poor girl who was on her own took at least 2 other calls from disgruntled guests asking to check out early. Stay clear of this...absolute rip off for what it is....if you actually get a room

I stayed here for 5 nights in February 2013 while on a business trip in New York.

The best thing about the hotel is it's location. It's right on Fifth Avenue in midtown with shops, restaurants and bars within easy reach. Surprisingly, whilst the hotel is in the middle of all this, it's actually very quiet.

The room was clean and basic. The bathroom was small but ok. The hot water runs out after a while which is not great during winter. Free wi-fi.

Some bad things about the hotel:
- They stuffed up my reservation which meant that they blocked out a much larger amount on my credit card than they had to. When I told them about the error, they said they couldn't do anything about it.
- On my first day, it was pouring out and I asked to borrow an umbrella as I had no way of getting to work without getting soaked. Every hotel I've stayed at always had a spare umbrella to lend guests. Particularly business hotels!
- There was a rude guy who manned the front desk at the hotel, who was extremely unhelpful. Every time I asked a question it seemed like a huge imposition for him to answer. I was not asking anything difficult - one night I asked if I could borrow scissors to cut off tags from a dress I bought.
- There is no room service, you basically have to order from the restaurants next door. One night I did this and they delivered my food. When I gave the guy money, he said he had no change... at all. It was an inconvenience I didn't need after a long at work.

As much as I liked the location of the hotel, there is no way I'd stay here again.

We selected the Jewel based on reviews submitted by other TA contributors and stayed there four nights. When we arrived we were warmly greeted. Because we requested a room on a high floor, we were offered (and accepted) a room on the 18th floor of the Jewel's adjacent/associated facility called Club Quarters. Although it appeared from street level that the Jewel's rooms had floor to ceiling windows and might be a newer hotel, we were very satisfied with the room we were given at Club Quarters. As are most hotel rooms in NYC, it was small. However, we found it very clean, comfortable, well maintained and to have all the amenities we wanted (in-room coffee, a working free wi-fi, etc.). Throughout our stay, we found the staff to be very helpful and responsive. A nice benefit of staying at this facility was that it also has on the 7th floor a terrace restaurant and bar that served good drinks and meals in a very friendly and comfortable setting. Because we were tired after a long flight and shuttle ride getting to the hotel in the early evening, we were glad the first night not to have to leave the Jewel, walk several doors down the street and enter another building to get to this 7th floor restaurant. We would definitely stay here again, perhaps requesting the highest floor available at the Jewel itself (instead of Club Quarters) to see what it it like. Again, the location of the Jewel/Club Quarters can't be beat and we recommend it. A final comment/example concerning hotel staff responsiveness -- late the second night of our stay the room smoke alarm started "chirping" due to a weak battery. We contacted the front desk and within minutes staff came to our room to fix the problem and apologize for the inconvenience.

Room Tip: Be aware that the Jewel and Club Quarters are two different affiliated hotels separated by several h...
