I booked and paid for the tickets before getting to the US. Great savings there - I can give the details if required. Plan to cram whatever you can in and use the tour as transport - superb value if used like that. Each guide requests a tip -that gets boring for us Brits, so just ignore and remember you have paid for the journey which they will do anyway...

You may get a bus with an open top (freezing at our visit time) or a Perspex moulded top.....

The guides varied as did their enthusiasm - a few just catered for US visitors, but they lost out on tips I suppose (at least from me)!

Much confusion of where to get on/off near Ground Zero - no signs... plus the complication of hurricane Sandy had changed the points, but we weren't told that and had to walk between the stops . Not complaining about that because we are able bodied - could be very difficult for elders.

Book in the UK.. Usual American money grapping stuff otherwise....

Im sure this service could be a great option if you could actually find the places the buses stop so you can use the service to get your moneys worth. Paid $108 for 2 adults for a 48hour loop tour and used the service just once in 2 days ! Im sure if i had paid for this single trip it would have cost no more that $10. When nightfall came and the drizzling rain the Hop on Hop off just seemed impossible to Hop On .... even chased one up the street to no avail ...... Luckily we found the best way to view New York without a doubt is on foot ... Amazing

Simple - There are no green buses - waited two hours at united nations - never showed - all weekend - never saw a bus except for when first bought at Times Square -(central park, 5th Ave, Empire State Building, Macys) - never a green bus - 100s of red and blue

We had already done bus tours of the city and decided we would like a hop on hop off bus to get around the city, we did generally walk most places but to get a little farther afield and see the city as you travel is quite appealing. We went to the gray line offices and bought tickets and started our two days of hopping on and off the bus, brilliant way to get around, a few times there were queues but we didn't seem to be waiting too long before another bus came along. We even took the night bus which went over to Brooklyn a couple of times even on one tour we just stayed on the bus getting off just a few streets from our hotel, we were at the Econolodge hotel which is just around the corner from the gray line offices, just off Times Square. Most guides are very knowledgeable, but have to say some more than others make the tour, one guide we had was Steve, brilliant with lots of titbits of information and all guides are very helpful in anywhere you want to go and how to get there and what to look for/do. We did the uptown loop, downtown loop, Brooklyn loop and night loop twice, was bit hectic but well worth it. You can always stop on the bus all the way round just for a break from walking and get to see the city from the top deck....

We are regular World travellers and have taken Hop on Hop off bus tours in at least 15 other cities. In New York in November for the Marathon that did not happen, we had plenty of time. I was with my wife and 95 year old mother. We took the 2 day pass so we could do both loops. Boarding the bus, we were shown where the Marathon had supposed to finish. (We went there the scheduled day of the race to meet our group, only to miss them, because that wasn’t it at all) Because it was so cold, my wife and mother stayed downstairs and I went up to the top deck to take photos. It was freezing, but I accepted that. The guide was cheerful and knowledgeable and I enjoyed the circuit, getting some great shots. When we arrived at the Metropolitan Museum, I went downstairs so we could hop off. I then found that the downstairs speakers were not working and the ladies had sat there freezing as there was no heating and there was a blast of cold air from a big ventilator at the rear, and they had not heard or learnt anything. As well as that, all the windows were covered in mesh with advertising painted on the outside, so it was impossible to see anything clearly anyway. The guide was apologetic, but admitted it had been faulty for some time. He could and should have told us when we got on. There was no tip
We went back to where we were dropped to catch the bus. After about half an hour, It drove straight past despite waving madly. We stood there in the freezing weather with our 95 tear old for another half an hour where the next bus also did the same. After 10 minutes a Grayline bus stopped and we asked them what was the go. Their guide told us that the City Sights bus didn’t stop there, but did so about 400 yards back. We were never told we were dropped at an unscheduled spot. The Greyline people took us onto their nice warm bus, free of charge out of pity, and I suspect, good service.
The next day we went to get on another City Sights bus, but first I asked if the downstairs intercom was working, only to be told, no, that most of them were faulty. It also had the same blast of cold air. We got off. I recommend, take the Greyline bus.
