“Plain & simple burger place to fuel-up”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2012

Let's say you're a tourist and you visit The Cloisters in the morning. Then you want to visit the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine down on West 110 St. So you take the Broadway subway line down to West 110 but you feel the need to fuel-up before heading over to the church. Conveniently, near the subway stop, is Mel's Burger Bar at 2850 Broadway. I had the Original burger. My wife had the turkey burger. Both were cooked as requested. Nice little salad was included. Efficient service. Cost $10 each. In New York, that's a bargain

“A Groupon Venture”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2012

A friend and I headed here to use a Groupon for two burgers and a pitcher of beer. I ordered the Fat Mexican burger, and it was great, although it was missing the avocado. My friend thoroughly enjoyed her burger and we shared a huge order of fries. The meal was outstanding. The atmosphere is sports-bar, which is perfect, but there was a couple with their young children sitting next to us. The children were being children, which is fine, but not what you expect, or want, when going to dinner at a sports bar.

“Burgers, Shakes and Beer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

Burgers, Shakes and Beer are excellent here. My wife loves the apple pie. The atmosphere is relaxed and a little student-y. The music was great (from Cab Calloway to Led Zeppelin).

“Nice lunch on the Upper West Side”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2012

Went to Mel's for lunch with my wife and 2 colleagues. All of us got burgers.
Starter: the onion rings were fantastic. The batter reminded me of really good fried chicken batter, a little spicy, and perfectly prepared. The burgers were fine, to be honest there are just so many good burger's in the city that it isn't always easy to be specific. If this were in the mid-west, where I live, it would be outstanding.

Service was a little weak, not always easy to catch the server and the restaurant wasn't that busy.

Price was standard for the locale.

Food came quickly, except for the colleague who joined us a little late--her food took much longer, as did service.

I'll probably go back because I go to the area with some regularity and I want those onion rings again.
