“Take the ALoft to Harlem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2013

Great hotel. Great price. Great location. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I LOVED the location in the midst of Harlem--or make that the New Harlem. The rooms were sleek and modern. Not the biggest in the world but darn sure big by NY standards. And more importantly, CLEAN! But it also had a sophisticated, young professional vibe. I saw so many sights I had heard about--the Apollo Theater, Sylvia's Soul Food, Marcus Samuelson's Red Rooster, Lenox Avenue, etc. I heard so many accents and languages from Jamaica, Africa, South America, etc. And the obvious white tourists really didn't stick out. They looked as safe as anyone else, probably because the number of young white professionals is more commonplace as the area gentrifies. We walked more than I have in years. It's actually fairly close to Columbia University. Tip: The #60 bus from LaGuardia cost all of $2.25 and took less than 30 minutes, dropping us off about a block away from the hotel. Tip 2: The subway is quick and easy, but grimy. Don't drop anything.

I originally chose this hotel because quite frankly it was the only hotel within walking distance of my client. But I was greatly and pleasantly surprised. The staff are awesome and helpful. Rooms clean and boutique-ish. This was my first Aloft and I will stay there again for business. The buffet for breakfast was great with healthy choices for meals as well. Plenty of yogurt, salads and complimentary coffee as well.
The staff are really incredible and quite frankly they are what makes this hotel so special. Kudos to my new friends. This is your friend that lives in the country where we have no sidewalks. Room 322. Barb

Room Tip: Get an inner room. Not one facing Frederick Douglas Blvd.

This is one of the coolest hotel properties i have ever stayed in. Great service (especially nor NYC), new prioperty and ultra cool design. Bed is sooo comfortable. That said the location is a little to edgy for me. Yes it is in Harlem but there are two parts to Harlem, the new trendy part and the old harlem. this hotel bridges the gap between the two. During the day its fine but at night i didnt fee comfortbale to walk to a restuarant (a 6' 225 llb ex football player).

Thank you for your great review! The Aloft brand is very modern and fun and we are glad you were able to experience that while staying with us! Harlem is up and coming and although there is still room for improvement, the history and the vibe of it, makes it worth being here. We are the first hotel in over 40 years and we are very happy to be part of the community. Thanks again for staying with us and we hope you stay with us again when visiting NYC!

Had a short stay at the Aloft, but what a lovely stay. We had a party of five and had two rooms, not the best view (interior walls), but a great hotel overall. The only issue we had was with the heating/cooling unit that kept our room a warm 76 degrees the entire stay. We called down to the front desk as soon as we arrived and told it should be a few minutes, but no one showed. Overall the hotel is in a great location, the dj in Saturday night we stayed was great, and the front desk staff was extremley friendly.

We chose this Aloft up at Harlem simply because of the astronomical hotel prices in downtown Manhattan. The other alternativew were robbing a bank or staying in a fleapit! Aloft isn't cheap by any means, but is considerably cheaper than similar options downtown.

We thought it might be a bit inconvenient being so far from the "action" but in fact it turned out to be an excellent choice. It is very near to a subway station (125th street) and in fact at night coming from downtown, many trains skipped a lot of stations but always stopped at 125th. There are bus stops close by (and actually it is very quick/convenient to take the bus to and from LaGuardia airport). And further, the uptown loop of the hop-on hop-off bus also stops very close by (Apollo Theatre stop), which we used a lot as we had alreayd paid for the pass. All in all then, it's in a very good location for transport.

Nothing much to say about the hotel itself, its new, the design is very contemporary, and the standard of room is what you would expect from a Starwoods group hotel. Free wifi is a nice touch, so many of the big hotel chains still charge astronomical rates for internet access.

The staff at the front desk were very friendly and always helpful. The prices at the bar are a bit steep though.

Thank you for the great review! We are glad that being uptown worked out for your plans while staying at our hotel. The public transportation is very convenient at all times of the day and the price is much less then taking a cab every where. Thanks again for choosing our hotel for your lodging needs and if you are ever in NYC, make sure to visit us again.

I personally like very modern or classic older hotels. The Aloft is a very modern hotel with good size rooms in the Upper West side of New York, AKA Harlem. This is a different area of New York that needs to be explored. There several newer upscale restaurants in the area and an express train only steps away to the main part of city. In one stop you go from 125th Street to 59th Street. If you are visiting Columbia University it's a 5 minute walk away.

I like the modern layout of room. Our rooms layout gave the feel of two separate rooms. The room has Kohller sinks and toilets. The isn't a dresser in the room, but there is open cubbies and closet space. Big TV with desk. The room was fairly priced one the location served our needs. Easy subway access to JFK.

We stayed here for NYE 2012. It was a surprisingly wonderful vacation! I thought it was going to be really far and detached from the NYE at Times Square experience, but it was perfect. We bought passes for the subway on day one at $28.00 each for 7 day pass with unlimited rides. The station was only a block away and super easy to get everywhere and it works for bus & train. It took us less time to hop on train to times square than taking taxi from a friend's hotel to times square. Everyone at the property was friendly and accommodating. They originally had us in a corner room, with a bad view, but switched us to another corner room facing the street. I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: high floor with street view otherwise you face nothing but walls
