“Standby experience at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”

My mom and I decided to try for standby tickets to attend the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show taping on the 20th of December 2012. The guests for this show were Billy Crystal, Tyson Chandler and the musical guest was Cee Lo Green.

Standby tickets are distributed at 9am under the "NBC Studios" sign on the 49th Street side of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. To be safe, we got there just after 6am and there were already about 10 people in front of us. We weren't confident we'd get in as we had heard that only 8 people got in with standby tickets the previous day but decided to give it a go anyway.

The standby line was not a pleasant experience at the beginning - it was freezing cold and my feet were getting frostbite as my shoes weren't warm enough! Definitely rug up if you are going during the winter! However, once we got chatting to others in line the time flew by and before I knew it it was 9am.

Now, on to the issue of line cutters. A number of people ahead of us had rudely decided to hold spots for their friends. Some of their friends decided to rock up at 830am, fully made up with their hair in fancy up-dos, with no regard for the people who had been waiting in line since before 630am. Despite originally being numbers 11 and 12 in the standby line, by the time standby tickets were handed out at 9am we were 17 and 18 thanks to line-cutters. A number of us banded together and informed the NBC pager of the line-cutting but unfortunately she couldn't do anything as she had no way of monitoring the line, but she did tell us to give them the stink-eye for the rest of the day (which we did). NBC definitely needs some system of monitoring the line to prevent line-cutting, as I and everyone else behind me in the line would have been extremely ticked off if we missed out on a spot to a line-cutter!

Definitely get there early - by about 830am there were over 100 people in the line.

Once the NBC pager gives out the tickets at 9am they tell you to come back at around 3ish (can't remember the exact time). Then they line everyone up and let you know how many standby places they have available. Originally they said they were letting in numbers 1 through 15, so my mom and I were heartbroken! So close! But then they put orange wristbands on our wrists and said we were in! I think they let in around 25 people or so.

Words cannot describe how awesome it felt to be sitting in the studio watching the show after the standby experience we went through. It was all worth it and more. I had to keep pinching myself to convince myself I wasn't dreaming!

Highlights of the taping -
(1) Jerry Seinfeld made a cameo appearance during a skit and the audience went off!
(2) Cee Lo Green performed with the Roots during all of the ad breaks - it was almost like a mini concert! His Christmas songs really got us into the Christmas spirit
(3) 12 Days of Christmas Sweaters! Darn it, I really wanted that sweater!
(4) Jimmy high-fiving everyone in the aisles after the show! All the ladies were hugging him, I'm still upset I was too far away from the aisle to get one :( I'll get you next time, Jimmy! Jimmy also did a dance for us at the end of the show!
(5) Last but not least, the FREE KINDLE FIRE HD! Jimmy gave one to everyone in the audience as part of 'Late Night Stocking Stuffers'. They do this every day of the last week before the Christmas break. So if you are ever in NYC the week before Christmas, go see Santa Jimmy!

All in all, it was the highlight of my NYC trip (maybe my life?) and I'll never forget it. If you are up for the thrill of standby, definitely give it a shot. Or you can be boring and request tickets on the show website - I've done this before and it's a very simple process. They give you a list of dates the show is taping, you pick the one that suits you and voi-la, they email you your tickets and you're good to go.

Oh, and another thing that might be useful to someone - the standby tickets say no bags allowed, but everyone was allowed to bring them in. Also, some people in line said no water bottles were allowed, but I cleared the security check with mine. So no need to sit through the taping thirsty!

I love Jimmy Fallon and his show and regularly watch it. When I finally got tickets to the show I was very excited. However, Mr. Fallon seemed under the weather the day we went and wasn't his usual "funny self". The beginning "skit" was pre-taped and boring to just see on a screen (I could have done that in my living room). The guests weren't any of my favorites or anyone I would have liked to see. The audience members that were "picked" to do the game that day seemed to be pre-picked somehow....not that I knew about when I was standing in line. Our seats were all the way in the back...even though I had a section # that was let in earlier than others. Maybe it was just the day I went...but I expected more

I think this is the best TV show to see in NYC. Here's why: You can turn this into the triple threat:
1. See the show
2. See Rockefeller Center
3. See Top of the Rock

It's efficient way to see three great attractions in 4 hours.

Can't see why anyone would rate this negatively! Free show? In NYC? C'mon man! We had a blast! The Roots are worth it alone! All you need to do is go online to Jimmy Fallon show website a month before you go to NY, and put in for tickets! Just make sure to arrive plenty early the day you are going. 2 hours minimum! That's all we did, and we had a blast!!!

We called a month in advance and got our confirmation letter...showed up that day around 230pm or so to get wristband..came back at 415pm to get inline. We really enjoyed it..saw Dave Matthews Band & Kiera Knightly...wish I could have sat on aisle seat so I could have grabbed his hand as he runs by at end of show but it was awesome! Takes up a lot of day to wait but so worth it..we got lucky with good guest but you have no idea when you request tkts..
