Our family had four goals: 1. to find some up and coming artists and be able to buy their work - in cool Bushwick- not at DUMBO where they've already "made it" 2. to eat good pizza 3. to understand the many ethnic groups living in Brooklyn and how they interact and 4. to see cool Brooklyn things that won't be there in 10 years because of urban development. Matt delivered that and more! We learnt about the urban graffiti as art form. Ate ethnic food in the areas where the locals eat. i.e. Jerk chicken in Bed-Sty, pizza at DeFarlo's, Artisan doughnuts and vegan ice cream at a "hipster hangout". All cheap, awesome quality food places we NEVER would have discovered on our own. Matt took us to Better than Jam where my daughter bought a ton of "hipster" clothes, at affordable prices, each piece made by local artists. Matt added bonuses - my kids were impressed at getting to see his parents house, and getting to see the meeting room of Occupy New York (esp good since we did a Financial Tour about the market crash/mortgage fiasco the next day). Having Matt (and his car) meant we got a lot of ground covered and avoided being stuck in the rain. And since Matt is (and dresses) like a cool hipster - we NEVER felt out of place. The art I bought was reasonably priced. If you want a A UNIQUE ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME experience to see a slice of Brooklyn that is rapidly changing you have to do this tour!
