“An expensive high end hotel that does not cater to it's guests”
Reviewed August 13, 2011

The hotel is very pretty in a great location however the management and staff have a long way to go before they have perfected a truly world class hotel experience. It is very clear that the focus is entirely on their "coolness" factor with their facilities and very little on making their guests happy. Upon check in I was not informed that to utilize any of the outdoor spaces, pool, Jimmys, greenhouse etc, you must reserve through front desk and still not likely to be accomodated. The attitude of employees at these locations was terrible. David Burkes breakfast is delicious however. Additionally, the cleaning continued to forget to replace my filtered water bottle they emphasize nor did they remember to replace towels. All in all a fine stay and pretty nice room, but there are many better options in Soho and TriBeCa at this price range that are focused entirely on their guest experience rather than press for how cool they are.

What a complete disappointed this hotel turned out to be. On the website it all looks great, big, wunderfull, bright, modern etc but these pictures are enormously deceiving! In fact this was the smallest down town NYC 400 usd per night room I have ever seen. The floors were already damaged in the room and instead of a luxury feel of a new hotel it already looked 10 years old. The pool upstairs is not a pool but a large bathtub and if you want 1 of the only 3 double beds you really have to reserve (!) like 6 weeks ahead. The pool is actually a rooftop bar so when you like to dip the pool after a days work it is not possible, it closes at 5 PM. Actually the hotel restaurants and bars are not really for the hotel guests but more for outside visitors and allthough staff is trying, you don't have the feeling you are actually a guest of your own hotel.

having heard about jimmys, and spending holidays in NYC, I convinced my husband to have some drinks at the place as soon as we got there, a guy by the door said Jimmys was hosting a private party that night, and that only "listed" people could get in. toobad he didnt have any list on his hands, and in any moment asked us if we have been invited... good thing is have we crossed the street and got to know the CAFE NOIR... that was a real treat for our night: awesome music, delicious food, friendly staff, trendy customers...
never will go back to James or Jimmys, certainly will return to CAFE NOIR!!! Thank you disgusting guy on a suit by the hotel's door!!!

This hotel has nice touches and amenities, but not impressed with the room as a business traveler. The room was very small (yes, even for NY), but nicely laid out with modern decor. The bathroom was separated from the bedroom (hard to really call it two rooms) by a glass wall. There was an electric shade with a mural that could be lowered for privacy. Cool design, but too small for working in the room. The only place to sit was a small table with a tiny aluminum chair or a padded bench (see photo). The room was annoying, but I probably could have put up with it for the week. It was the room upkeep that pushed it over the top. The room had a single rug under the table, which was badly stained. And there was a hair clog in the shower drain - yuck. Not what I expected from a luxury boutique hotel. I checked out after one night.

I stayed at this hotel during Memorial Day weekend. I was very happy that I found this hotel. It is in good location in Soho. Jimmy's bar was good, although pricey, even for New York standards. The pool was great, and it was not packed, but that was probably due to the fact that it was still not advertised that it was open. The view from the top of the roof deck was amazing and definitely one of the best Manhattan views I have seen. Staff was helpful. Wine reception at night with cheese was definitely a good touch.

The room was nice, although it did not have a bath. The bed was comfortable. It was a decent size room for New York standards. I was celebrating a friend's birthday and the hotel sent chocolates and champagne to us, which was a nice touch.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel, but only if you can find a good rate. A standard rate seems to be between $350-$400, which is a LOT for this hotel.

We had a wonderful week in The James and really enjoyed the whole package: roof top with pool, great view and Jimmys Bar (excellent margheritas!), the fitness room as well as David Burke Kitchen, where they created very tasteful non-alcoholic cocktails for us. The rooms are well designed giving a more generous impression due to the glass wall separating the bathroom, and the shower was generous indeed. Nice!
We felt very welcome and experienced excellent service.

This is a new hotel and was still finding its way when we stayed there but considering that everything went well. The pool on the roof wasn't yet open but it looked a very promising facility with a comfortable seating area and great views. Unfortunately the rooftop bar appears to have been contracted out to be run as a bar/night club so was only open in the evening when it attracted a lively and youngish crowd from outside (it had its own separate entrance and elevator from the street level). This meant that we couldn´t go up for a drink, for instance, at midday. We didn't eat breakfast in the hotel because we walked to our daughter and son-in-law who live nearby. However we understand from other guests we knew that it is more than adequate.
Location is perfect within easy walking distance of all parts of lower Manhattan from China Town and South Street Seaport in the East to the riverside walks along the Hudson to the West, Wall Street in the South and the wonderful High Line Park to the North. And for shopping nothing can beat Lower Broadway, just around the corner!
We got a great week-end deal, three nights for the cost of two nights.

Room Tip: We had a king size room on high floor with patial view over the Hudson River
