“Wish we could have stayed longer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2012

We had a great stay at the Andaz 5th Ave at the beginning of Nov 2012. Was scheduled to work the 2012 NY Marathon so our trip was cut short when the event was canceled at the last moment.

The property and employees were very hospitable when we arrived and was quickly checked in and brought to our room. We asked for a Hyatt Gold Passport Platinum Member upgrade but was denied due to Hurricane Sandy causing the property to be sold out. Most of the Trip Advisor reviews are right on. Nice sized standard king room with tall ceilings and an AMAZING bathroom. The location was a quick 5-10 minute walk to Times Square and all the shopping you can handle. The "Bar Downstairs" is a true highlight of the property however the service was a bit slow. The free non-alcoholic mini bar is a great touch and the technology in the room was great as well. Looking forward to our next trip to the Andaz 5th Ave so we can enjoy the property longer.

We were originally supposed to stay at Andaz 5th Ave for 4nts from 27 Oct, but due to hurricane Sandy, ended up having to extend our stay until 04 Nov.

Upon our arrival we were greeted by Ramone who offered us wine/refreshments while he checked us in. The lobby area was quite large with a seating area/library off to one side and restaurant to the other. A few minutes later we were taken to our allocated room and shown all the amenities the room had to offer. Our room was on the 7th floor, (an XL King with view) and we had a lovely view of the library and 42nd Street. The bed was really comfortable, our son had a rollaway bed which was also comfortable. The bedroom was a good size and had a large 42inch flatscreen TV, sofa, mini fridge with complimentary snacks and non alcoholic drinks, safety deposit box, a small glass wardrobe, bedside drawers, iron & ironing board and desk with a telephone. There was a touchpad control for the lights and window blind, which was straight forward to use. It would have been handy if there was a mirror over the desk as the only other mirror in the room was next to the glass wardrobe in the entrance. It was mentioned in previous reviews about noise from the road outside, the only thing we could just about hear was the sound of police/fire engine sirens.

The bathroom was lovely, it had twin sinks, the shower area had a rain shower, normal shower and footbath. We managed to work out the controls for each one after a couple of goes. There was also a hairdryer and toiletries. The only thing I would suggest to change in the bathroom is the lighting, it was rather dim. Other than that the bathroom was very modern, clean and towels changed every day.

Because of hurricane Sandy the hotel issued us with a torch and glow sticks and offered us complimentary pay per view films/TV. We were expecting the power to fail, but fortunately the hotel was not affected (1 block away was in complete darkness)We were kept informed at all times by staff. When we were told our return flight was cancelled I contacted reception who extended our stay straight away and offered assistance contacting my airline. We met with other guests in the seating/library area of an evening, swapping stories over our glasses of complimentary wine (Ramone was the best 'host'). It is a nice touch that the hotel offers this between 6pm and 9pm each evening.

We used the restaurant for breakfast as everywhere else was closed due to Sandy. The eggs, bacon and hash brown was very nice and staff very attentive.

The Andaz 5th Ave is right in the middle of all the tourist areas, 5 mins in each direction to Grand Central Station, Time Square, Empire State Building and shopping on 5th Ave.

This was our 2nd trip to New York, 1st time at Andaz. When we do return there is only one hotel we shall chose and that is Andaz 5th Avenue. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful, the hotel is modern with a warm atmosphere and in an excellent location.

I got a last minute room in the wake of Hurricane Sandy troubles, and would have been happy anywhere warm and with electricity. But this was a very cool corner of paradise. From the anti-hotel vibe in the lobby to the huge near floor to ceiling room windows overlooking the NY Public Library, the Andaz 5th oozes style in every corner. The hotel offers a great combination of elegant modern with a hint of classic. The cleanly designed room is minimalistic, yet warm with a odd-shaped, large couch perfect for gazing through the windows at the lights of the city skyscrapers. The bathroom is designed in wood and glass, with a huge shower (no bath) which includes a seat and foot bath in the back corner. I loved the pounded metal double sinks, very pretty. Another fun feature is that the room is operated entirely by touch, not traditional light switches. And, another nice touch when hotels often "nickel and dime" you for everything.. snacks and non-alcoholic room beverages are complimentary.. Add complimentary lobby coffee in the mornings and glasses of wine in the evenings.. and it all adds up to a fabulous stay. Great for business trips, couples, even families thanks to the large spacious feeling in the rooms. It's also a great location from which to launch exploring Manhattan. Enjoy. I plan to do so myself again.

Great looking hotel with friendly staff and good location. Highlights include the well-designed bathrooms and showers, the automated window shades and the free snacks and non-alcoholic minibar items. Friendly but low key, not 'in your face' service -- and I mean that in a good way. Also, Andaz has free in-room wi-fi, which is a must. I will definitely choose this place again, and in fact have a current reservation for later this year.

Just a few minor suggestions to get it from really good to perfect:

--the baggage holding area is out in the open in a corner of the library/lounge area. This is unsightly and also lacks proper security for peoples' belongings.

--the food at the restaurant is just OK. One dinner I had there was particularly substandard. However, in the hotel's defense, they offered to comp the meal without any unpleasantness whatsoever, which really mitigated the whole situation in my mind (although I didn't eat in the restaurant again during the trip).

--gym is sort of lacking ... there seems to be a lot of wasted space on the 2nd floor where they could put a better gym and spa, which would be more consistent with the price point and style of the hotel.

Dear JRVSP,

We hope you will make us your regular spot too! Thank you for your suggestions. We have a brand-new secure luggage closet, but sometimes luggage is in our cubby area staged for pick up via our car service. Rest assured we make sure someone is watching it until it is loaded. While I am glad we took care of the meal, I'm sorry that you had a dinner that was not to your liking in the shop. We absolutely welcome the details about what aspects can be improved so that we can make sure you will enjoy future meals there. I will also contact you directly about your suggestions for our fitness center. Thank you again for staying with us, and hope to see you again soon!

Warm regards,

Connie

Lucky to have stayed there during our visit to NYC. Sad for the people that were affected by the hurricane. No electricity just 2 blocks away. Met by Ms. Cornelia Samara, the GM, upon arrival. Made us feel at home. A few goodies for the kids left in the room. A nice touch. We stayed in the suite. Good sized rooms for NYC. Lovely terrace with excellent views. Breakfast at the shop was great. The lemon soufflé pancake is a must. The eggs benedict too. Homey feel. Thank you to the general manager and team. Would highly recommend this hotel.

We arrived after a 3.5 hour journey from EWR, in the wake of Sandy, so the welcoming glass of wine was well received. Reception is trying a bit hard to be different and the iPad the lady had was did not have the right dates on it, but her charm made up the deficit and we were booked straight in and shown to our suite, in the most comprehensive manner. Snacks and soft drinks free, nice touch, great space, free wifi, but the huge TV's had a non-inituitive interface, which was annoying and hard to work. The bar is downstairs and is a brave attempt to blend the chefs with the customers, with completely open cooking stations, we didn't try it as it was standing room only and we were knackered. Benjamin's down the road was great though. We'd definitely go back, as it is perfectly sited for 5th Avenue, Bryant Park, the Theater district and only a mile and a bit to Central Park. Having so many female front of house staff gave it a very relaxing ambience, very friendly.

Room Tip: View of the Public Library is good.

We stopped at this hotel for my 30th birthday and 3rd anniversary celebrations! It was also when hurricane Sandy hit! The hotel could not have been more helpful and accommodating given this situation we were all faced with. On arrival we had an upgrade to a lovely suite room which was great. The restaurant and bar areas are very nice and the food is also lovely!

When we return to NYC we don't have to worry about looking for a hotel as I would always stop at the Andaz!
