This hotel tries hard to be stylish, modern, funky and top of the range.... it almost succeeds.

Architecturally, the hotel is cutting-edge. Public spaces are sophisticated. Rooms are stylish with state-of-the-art fittings. Huge bathrooms have a real wow factor with black stone and red marble treatment. Complimentary snacks in the rooms are a nice touch. Location is great - directly opposite the New York Public Library.

Unfortunately, we found the service to be well behind that we experienced everywhere else in New York. Check-in with the state-of-the-art island check-in system was confusing and slower than a normal check-in arrangement; it was surprisingly hard to get served in the ground floor bar area and it took the hotel two days to find and deliver to us package that had been sent to us using UPS express service.

Some more active management intervention is needed to get the best out of the enthusiastic youthful staff and turn this from being a great building into a great hotel.

The hotel is very artsy and beautiful! From the moment we walked through the door the staff were very friendly, helpful, and accomodating.

I was traveling with family, so we stayed in a suite. I love the views of the Empire State Building and the library across the street.

I loved the foot bath in the shower, and the food and snacks in the mini were complimentary.

The staff left us store our luggage and we were able to check in two hours early.

While we were waiting for our room, I loved being able to hang out in the library with artsy books to look through and listen to the beautiful, telaxing music playing the background. I felt so peaceful that I actually feel asleep in one of the chairs in the library.

You can't beat the customer service at this hotel. When we take an trip to NYC, we are going to stay at this hotel.

Truly a fantastic stay! All the agents working at reception are courteous, professional and knowledgeable. My room was spacious and modern. Loved the hardwood floors and sleek design. And the bathroom.. just WOW. Great fixtures, amazing lighting and space, space, space.

I dined both in the restaurant and through room service and the food was amazing. Fresh ingredients and beautiful presentation.

Do yourself a favor... and STAY STAY STAY HERE.

We checked into the Andaz in a rush after checking out of the Yotel two days early because the Yotel has no customer service and is not meant for people who want to sleep. The Andaz staff were so kind and accommodating. They stored our luggage until our room was ready and allowed us to access our room two hours early. We got an upgrade to a beautiful corner suite with a balcony. We could see Time Square, the Empire State Building, and the WTC tower from our room in addition to the beautiful library across the street. The staff were responsive to all our needs and we slept great at this place. This is our new favorite hotel and we hope to return soon and to try the other Andaz hotels in the country.

Room Tip: The corner suites have an amazing view.

The pluses:
The bed was big and comfortable, with nice pillows. The rooms have
good high ceilings and lots of storage space. The location is very
central - although would not be first choice if you want the more stylish parts of town. There are lots of complementary snacks and drinks, both in
the room and the lobby. The bathroom (actually a shower room) was very
stylish. The staff were very enthusiastic and friendly.
The minuses:
Lots of the design involved style over substance. The overall room
space was large but was divided up in a way that left a 2 foot gap
between the bed and the wall/ television. The safe was behind a pull
down shelf that then projected out requiring the arms of a large
primate to reach the back of the safe itself. There was a kitchenette
but only one glass (in a room for up to four people). The cutlery was
in a drawer with a flat front. It did not open with a spring
action, you had to coax it open squeezing your fingers between the
bottom edge and the dishwasher (yes) door below. There were the usual
signs about hanging up your towels. The double sink had one small
towel rail on one side and nothing on the other. There were two more
hooks for towels which left none for the bathrobes. One of the room
divider doors did not close properly and the doors to the bathroom
closed with enormous creaking and banging sounds however carefully you
tried.

Overall we wished we had not chosen to pay for this much space when
lots of it was badly used.

When we left we were told that they could not get any taxis and were offered a town car to Penn station for $35. We took that and later got billed for about $140 dollars. It was refunded after an email and phone call but the email confirming it was being refunded apologised for the delay in replying but not for overcharging us in the first place. Not the best customer service.

Room Tip: We wished we had gone for a loft style room as the space might have been better used - it is difficu...

Dear Tiptop_65,

Thank you for staying with us! I'm glad to hear that you felt our team was enthusiastic and friendly. Thank you also for your design feedback of your guestroom suite. You will be glad to know that we plan on renovating the inside of our kitchenette in 2013 to make them more user-friendly, particularly the drawers that you mentioned. Our Engineering team is looking into making sure the divider door hinges are better oiled. I am so sorry that we overcharged for transportation - you are right, even though this was corrected, it should never have happened in the first place. Please let me know if you are planning to be back in New York. I would love to personally make sure that you have a great room during your next stay, and show you what we have done in improvements!

Warm regards,

Connie

From the attentive doorman to the hostess who greeted me at the door with a bottle of sparkling water... I was made to feel special every step of the way. There is no check in desk and you are put right at ease as the host checks you in on an IPad. I requested and received a quiet, minimalist room with high end features such as touch operated black out shades. Room service was fast and reasonable. I requested a toothbrush and received the toothbrush, toothpaste and floss. It's as if the staff really wanted to exceed every expectation. The hotel is directly across from the New York Library. This was my first stay and won't be the last!
